K-8 Student Support Specialist

Horton’s Kids partners with more than 700 children and families in Southeast Washington, DC to ensure every young person graduates from high school ready for success in college, career, and life. We make a 13-year commitment to each child and provide integrated, year-round support across three pillars:
Educational Attainment, Family Stability, and Safety & Belonging. We operate place-based programs in Anacostia, with a central Hub and two Community Resource Centers located inside the apartment buildings where many of our families live. Any child or caregiver living within a half-mile of our Hub can access comprehensive services, including high-impact tutoring, after-school and summer programming, social-emotional learning, college and career readiness, mental health and wellness resources, groceries and essentials, and community safety initiatives.

Horton’s Kids is seeking a Classroom Teacher, Social Worker, or Board-Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) to provide behavioral support at our in-person Summer Camp for roughly 100 children in grades K-8. This position will support students in regulating their emotions and providing a safe space for children to process and re-engage in summer programming.

For children, Horton’s Kids Summer Camp is a 5-week program running Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 3:00 pm. The time commitment for the Student Support Specialist is Monday through Thursday from 8:00am-3:30 pm. Final program dates will be finalized and shared prior to hiring. Summer Program Teachers are guaranteed 20 workdays, including mandatory training sessions.

• Oversee the use of the Mindfulness room, a space used for interventions to support students’ social, emotional, and mental health needs.
• Respond to crisis situations and implement HK behavior intervention procedures, including a system of incentives and consequences.
• Provide individual support to students when their teachers’ in-classroom interventions do not meet the child’s needs.
• Develop strong relationships with students.
• Record and report on behavioral data, as requested.
• Implement and coach individual students that have HK Behavior Intervention Plans
• Support the implementation of trauma-informed practices across all classrooms.

• 2+ years as a classroom teacher, school social worker, psychologist, or behaviorist
• Ability and willingness to collaborate with others to support students.
• Ability to facilitate group interventions with students of varying needs.
• Knowledge of Special Education, IEP and 504 plans, and the educational landscape of DC
• Strong behavior management and classroom management skills
• Experience collaborating with others.
• Experience working with children and families who come from under-resourced, urban backgrounds.
• Demonstrated commitment to racial equity and social justice for children and families

Hourly Rate: $40 - $45 per hour based on experience.
