Position: Lewis Summer Scholarship 2026 (Stipend of $1,000 Per Month)

The Lewis Scholarship, established in 2023, offers free housing and a monthly stipend to student journalists of color who intern at news media outlets in Washington, D.C.

This $10,000 scholarship is given to one undergraduate student journalist of color each summer semester. The scholarship provides a $1,000 monthly stipend and free housing through Washington Intern Student Housing for the duration of the student’s internship, which is typically four months.

Benefits:

Eligibility Criteria:

To qualify, candidates must:

  • Be a college student of color in their 3rd or 4th year of undergraduate study, at least 18 years old (graduating seniors are eligible if the internship is in the semester after graduation).
  • Have a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
  • Secure an on-site journalism internship in Washington, D.C., during the semester they receive the scholarship.
  • Provide proof of internship acceptance (not required at the time of application).
  • Plan to pursue a career in journalism.
  • Non-U.S. citizens may apply if enrolled at an accredited U.S. college or university.

Note: Applicants are encouraged to apply for the Lewis Scholarship while seeking internships. The Institute staff will verify the internship status.
