The National Press Club Journalism Institute believes a strong democracy depends on a well-trained, free press. The Institute’s portfolio includes professional development opportunities for journalists and strategic initiatives that advance press freedom in the U.S. and beyond.
The Institute is seeking a mission-driven Program Coordinator to execute professional development programs and timely press freedom initiatives. This temporary, part-time position will play a key role in the Institute’s delivery of high quality, meaningful work that directly supports journalists. This position has potential to transition into a full-time role.
The Program Coordinator role offers a unique opportunity to support journalists when and how they need it most. The ideal candidate is passionate about journalism, thrives in a collaborative environment, and excels at juggling multiple projects.

Key Responsibilities
- Support the promotion and execution of journalism trainings, workshops, briefings, and networking events (virtual and in-person), to include coordinating speakers, preparing materials, and managing participant communications
- Create and update training and press freedom-focused resources, including toolkits, reference guides, fact sheets, and FAQs for journalists and partners
- Support NPCJI’s response to press freedom incidents, including tracking developments, coordinating internal workflows, and assisting with time-sensitive actions
- Facilitate NPCJI community gatherings (digital and in person)
- Provide administrative support for NPCJI programs, including documentation, expense tracking, and reporting
- Collaborate with communications, development, and leadership teams to align programs and resources with organizational priorities
- Assist with internal updates, program documentation, and basic evaluation efforts
Qualifications & Skills
- Strong commitment to journalism as a vital part of a healthy democracy
- Background in journalism, media advocacy, nonprofit programs, training, or related public interest work
- Experience or demonstrated interest in training, education, or capacity-building work
- Excellent organizational and project management skills, with the ability to adapt quickly to changing priorities
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, especially the ability to translate complex issues into practical guidance or resources
- Comfort working with diverse stakeholders
- High attention to detail and follow-through
- Proficiency with common office and collaboration tools (e.g., Google Workspace; project management or CRM tools a plus)
Preferred Experience
- Familiarity with press freedom issues, journalist safety, media law, or crisis response
- Experience developing training materials, toolkits, or instructional resources
Compensation
$25 to $40 hourly rate, commensurate with experience.
