Job Description Minimum Qualifications Education

  • Associate’s degree in Business Administration, Facility Management/Engineering, Construction Management, Mechanics
  • In lieu of an Associate’s degree or technical school degree, a high school diploma or GED and two (2) years of experience in structure inspection, maintenance and repair on a Class I railroad or on an electrified rail transit system, or related experience in the construction industry performing facility or bridge new construction and/or rehabilitation (in addition to the experience requirement below)
Experience
  • A minimum of three (3) years of experience in structure inspection, maintenance, and repair on a Class I railroad or on an electrified rail transit system, or related experience in the construction industry performing facility or bridge new construction and/or rehabilitation
Certification/Licensure
  • Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator’s license issued from the jurisdiction of residence
Preferred
  • Prior experience working in a unionized environment

Mission Essential Designation

In accordance with the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority’s Continuity of Operations Plan (COOP) this job has been identified as critical to mission essential functions. Incumbents in this role may be required to report to or continue to work in the event of authorized office closings or service suspensions due to severe weather, natural disaster, fire, operational emergencies or related events.

Job Summary

The Supervisor, Structure Maintenance & Inspection, is responsible for supervising structure maintenance and inspection crews in the maintenance, construction, and inspection of the Authority’s track and way system, including facilities. The incumbent is subject to call‑in for emergency or unusual conditions.

Essential Functions
  • Plans, performs, and oversees activities such as structure maintenance, structure inspection, new bridge and facility construction. The variety of repairs include leak repairs, expansion joints, drains, fence, structure support beams and walls, and/or fabrications to/on all types of structures to include concrete, block, wood, and steel.
  • Ensures structure personnel performing maintenance and inspection work are aware of standards, tolerances, and typical adverse conditions that may affect the movement and behavior of structures, facilities, and the track.
  • Serves as the Roadway‑Worker‑in‑Charge (RWIC) to provide a safe Roadway work environment for crews and/or contractors.
  • Ensures structure personnel are trained in the proper use and operation of all equipment. Provides on‑the‑job training to subordinate personnel.
  • Creates and maintains records and reports of work production, deficiencies, management, and usage of materials, authenticates and verifies daily time reports of employees.
  • Ensures safety requirements and Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) rules and regulations are followed while performing maintenance, inspection, and construction activities.
  • Plans methods and sequences for maintenance, inspection, and construction jobs. Ensures all material and equipment are identified, gathered, and available prior to execution of maintenance, inspection, and construction work. Ensures equipment is maintained and sent for Preventive Maintenance Inspection (PMI) as required.
  • Maintains spare parts and tool/equipment inventory for projected inspection, maintenance, repair, and construction programs.
Other Functions
  • Operates WMATA non‑revenue vehicles.
