The Role

As a Transmission Pipeline Engineering Manager, you’ll be at the forefront of shaping the strategy, standards, and safety of our pipeline assets across the gas transmission network.
You’ll provide expert technical leadership, ensure compliance with key legislation and industry standards, and guide how we maintain asset performance now and in the years ahead. As a recognised centre of expertise, your work will shape policy decisions, steer investment, and influence national regulatory dialogue.
Your Responsibilities- Leading the development, evaluation, and delivery of engineering and asset solutions for high–pressure gas pipelines and associated installations.
- Ensuring our technical policies, specifications, and procedures drive maximum value for consumers and stakeholders through a risk‑based approach.
- Acting as the organisation’s lead expert on pipeline statutory documents and industry standards, representing us in key forums such as UKOPA and HSE engagements.
- Managing and inspiring a high‑performing technical team (c12) across a range of pipeline disciplines.
- Reviewing and approving proposed deviations from pipeline procedures and standards, ensuring appropriate commercial and compliance considerations.
- Conducting technical investigations, establishing root cause, and driving improvements to enhance asset integrity and performance.
- Setting performance targets, monitoring delivery, and embedding continuous improvement.
- Building strong relationships with internal teams across Asset, Operations, Construction, Procurement, and Regulation, as well as external partners including Ofgem and competent authorities.
You’re an influencer, a collaborator, and a technical leader. You thrive in complex environments, bring clarity to engineering challenges, and communicate confidently with stakeholders at all levels. Your ability to translate technical insight into strategic direction is key to succeeding in this role.
Key Requirements & Experience- Degree in a relevant engineering discipline.
- Ability to lead and get the best out of multidisciplinary technical teams (Mechanical, Civils and Cathodic Protection).
- Significant experience in pipeline asset management within gas transmission or petrochemical environments.
- Strong understanding of intervention philosophies (e.g. RCM).
- Demonstrable experience in technical assessment, risk management, and complex problem solving.
- Experience developing and deploying pipeline strategies.
- Proven capability in horizon scanning and benchmarking.
- Skilled in management of change and risk processes.
- Strong stakeholder management, including regulatory engagement (e.g. Ofgem, HSE).
- Familiarity with asset performance target setting and continuous improvement methodologies.
- Ability to influence policy, standards, and long‑term strategic planning.
- Have or be working towards chartership.
The successful candidate must be able to achieve and maintain Security Check (SC) security clearance for this role.
