Role Overview

My client is seeking an experienced Road Freight Business Development Manager to drive profitable growth across UK and European road freight services. Based in Warrington, this role is responsible for identifying new business opportunities, developing long-term customer relationships, and winning strategic accounts across groupage, part-load, and full-load road freight solutions.

The successful candidate will combine strong new business sales capability with commercial acumen, market awareness, and a solid understanding of international road freight operations. You will play a key role in expanding market share, protecting margin, and positioning the business as a trusted logistics partner.

Road Freight Business Development Manager

Key Responsibilities
  • Identify, target, and win new road freight customers across the UK and Europe
  • Develop and manage a strong pipeline of qualified opportunities
  • Conduct outbound prospecting, customer meetings, site visits, and presentations
  • Negotiate commercial terms and close profitable business
  • Build long‑term relationships with key customers to drive retention and account growth
  • Upsell and cross‑sell additional services where appropriate
  • Own pricing strategy for new business, ensuring margin protection
  • Work closely with operations and procurement to build competitive, sustainable rates
  • Understand cost drivers, lane profitability, and market conditions
  • Monitor performance against agreed commercial targets
  • Track competitor activity, market trends, and customer requirements
Road Freight Business Development Manager Skills & Experience Required
  • Proven experience in road freight business development or sales
  • Strong knowledge of UK and European road freight (groupage, LTL, FTL)
  • Demonstrated track record of winning and developing profitable customers
  • Commercially minded with strong negotiation and pricing skills
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and relationship‑building ability
  • Self‑motivated, target‑driven, and comfortable working autonomously
  • Experience selling international European road freight services
  • Knowledge of CRM systems and sales reporting
