Summary of Primary FunctionThe Emergency Department (ED) Registered Nurse (RN) provides, coordinates, plans, and evaluates nursing care, and supervises licensed and unlicensed associates in nursing care delivery within established nursing procedures, professional standards, and organizational policies. The ED RN demonstrates the ability to care for a group of patients in a fast‑paced, high‑intensity setting as part of an interprofessional team focused on achieving the best individual patient and population outcomes.
The RN models core cultural and safety behaviors to eliminate preventable harm, ensure worker safety, and provide a safe, high‑quality experience of care.
- Collaborate with the interdisciplinary team to conduct initial and ongoing patient assessment, analyze data, create a plan of care, implement treatment, and evaluate effectiveness.
- Administer medications safely in accordance with state practice and Mercy Health policies.
- Serve as point of contact for patient care coordination throughout hospital departments.
- Act as a patient safety advocate by participating in ongoing quality improvement.
- Manage the physical and emotional demands of emergency nursing care.
- Apply contemporary emergency nursing practice and future innovations.
- Provide care for individuals across the lifespan, from non‑urgent to life‑threatening conditions, including medical, trauma, pediatric, gerontologic, injury prevention, women’s health, mental health, and life‑saving measures.
- Collaborate with outside agencies (protective services, law enforcement, local crisis, forensics, EMS, transfer centers, pharmacies).
- Understand that emergency nursing care is episodic, primary, short‑term, and occurs in a variety of settings.
- Practice according to the BSMH Nursing Professional Practice Model.
- Current RN license in the state of employment or covered by compact (required).
- BLS Basic Life Support or ACLS Advanced Cardiac Life Support and PALS pediatric advanced life support (preferred; must be obtained before direct patient care; ACLS and PALS required within 6 months).
- NPR Neonatal Resuscitation Program (preferred).
- TNCC Trauma Nursing Core Course (preferred).
Bachelor of Science Nursing (preferred).
Work Experience- 1 year of RN experience (required).
- Recent Emergency Department or Critical Care experience (preferred).
EPIC Electronic Health Record (EHR) training preferred.
Skills- Assign patient care according to skill, knowledge, and scope of practice.

- Possess clinical knowledge, skills, and competency for evidence‑based patient care.
- Conduct comprehensive assessment of patient’s clinical condition and psychosocial needs.

- Apply the nursing process in patient care delivery.
- Evaluate treatment effectiveness and revise plan of care.
- Assist patients and families in coping with illness.
- Collaborate with others for coordinated patient care.
