Job SummarySummary: Provides visual and audible observation of assigned patients under the direction of a Registered Nurse (RN) and unit manager.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Visually and audibly monitors the assigned patient's condition and behavior at all times.
- Completes observation reports at established intervals.
- Takes initiative in rendering compassionate service; interacts hospitably, cheerfully, and supportively with staff, patients, visitors and coworkers.
- Remains at the bedside of the assigned patient at all times unless relieved by an appropriate staff member.
- Verbalizes redirection of the patient from engaging in at-risk behaviors.
- Seeks help or advice promptly when a patient appears distressed or poses a threat, and escalates to assigned medical professionals.
- Participates in identifying and reporting patient safety issues. Ensures patient environment is safe; reports hazards to the charge nurse. Removes visible hazards and reports as appropriate.
- Assists in calming and/or reorienting the patient in cases of agitation or confusion.
- Assists with keeping the patient's room safe and orderly.
- Accompanies the patient during diagnostic testing when required.
- Immediately summons nursing staff if the patient requires assistance or exhibits concerning behavior, and reports to the nurse as needed.
- Participates in hand-off of pertinent information about the patient when arriving on unit and upon shift completion. Arranges coverage around meal breaks with the nurse and informs the nurse prior to leaving the patient for any reason.
- Assists the patient with ordering dietary trays and setting up meals; assists with basic positioning, wheelchair transfers and ambulation if safe and appropriate.
- Responds rapidly to emergencies and special needs.
- Accepts guidance from supervisors and hospital staff; demonstrates knowledge of department policies and procedures; adheres to attendance, dress, hygiene, and safety rules; maintains confidentiality and regulatory requirements.
- Participates in department and hospital education programs; assists other associates as necessary; performs other duties as assigned.
- High School Diploma, GED or equivalent required.
- Current CPR AED or BLS-HCP certification required within 30 days of hire, if required at the facility.
- Ability to walk or stand for prolonged periods; ability to bend, stoop, reach, and lift up to 50 pounds.
- One to two years of previous experience is preferred.
