Job Description & How to Apply Below

Overview

At Lumicell, we’ll give you the opportunity to harness all that’s within you by working in a mission driven start-up environment with high-performing employees, tackling some of the most important challenges in cancer surgery. We are working to revolutionize the way cancer surgery is performed today, starting with breast cancer. Women in the US have a 1 in 8 lifetime risk of being diagnosed with breast cancer.

Every two minutes, a person is diagnosed. Our founder, David Lee lost his wife to breast cancer due to cancer being left behind during surgery. You will be a part of something groundbreaking as we transition from clinical development to our commercial launch.

Lumicell is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to work in a dynamic, fast-paced start-up environment. The Senior Software Engineer will develop imaging and image-processing software for medical purposes. This role will be responsible for software architecture, implementation, verification, and documentation in compliance with medical device standards, supporting both real-time imaging workflows and downstream analytics.

What you will do
  • Design and implement medical imaging and image-processing software for regulated medical devices
  • Define and maintain software architecture and interfaces across hardware and system components
  • Develop software in compliance with IEC 62304, including lifecycle documentation, risk management, and traceability
  • Perform software verification and validation, including unit, integration, and system-level testing
  • Contribute to software risk assessments and mitigation strategies
  • Prepare and maintain software release documentation to support regulatory submissions and audits
  • Collaborate closely with systems, optical, clinical, and quality teams throughout development
What you will bring
  • Degree in Biomedical Engineering, Bioengineering, Computer Science, or a related field
  • Proven track record developing software to be used for medical purposes that performs these purposes as part of a hardware medical device
  • Experience with medical device software standards (IEC 62304, ISO 14971, FDA expectations)
  • Strong proficiency in modern software development practices and version control
  • Experience developing image processing or computer vision algorithms
An outstanding candidate will also possess the below experience
  • Experience developing, training, and validating image-processing or computer-vision models using modern ML frameworks (e.g., PyTorch), including transfer learning and fine-tuning of pre-trained or foundation models (e.g., Res Net/Efficient Net backbones, Vision Transformers, U-Net–derived architectures, SAM, or self-supervised models such as DINO or MAE).
  • Experience applying models to medical or scientific imaging, including transfer learning, domain adaptation, and rigorous validation of model performance (e.g., leveraging models like SAM, CLIP-derived vision encoders, or encoder–decoder architectures for segmentation and feature extraction).
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
  • This is a full-time position, 40 hours per week. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday during business hours. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand.
  • This is a Hybrid position, and the ability to be on-site 3 days a week is required.
