GENERAL SUMMARY OF DUTIES
:
Under the supervision of the Operating Room Manager/Director of Nursing, according to the organizational structure, and at the direction of Registered Nurses, performs surgical scrubbing. Assures proper care and maintenance of all surgical instrumentation and equipment while maintaining the sterile field. Demonstrates good knowledge of principles and practices of aseptic technique and infection control. Demonstrates knowledge of all equipment, instruments, procedures and supplies utilized in the operating room.
Projects a professional demeanor and appearance while maintaining the confidentiality of patients, co-workers, and the surgery center and adhering to the HIPAA policy. Reports, in good faith, any known or suspected activity that appears to violate laws, rules, regulations or the Code of Conduct. Fulfills annual continuing education requirements. Personal attributes include the ability to be self-directed; demonstrates accountability, professionalism, and receptiveness to change;
seeks guidance, direction, and assistance when needed. Works under stress and in situations that demand patience, stamina, endurance, and tact while providing impeccable service. Fosters an attitude of teamwork and willingness to assist others and does not refuse performing other job duties as requested. Sets priorities, responds timely to issues which require a decision, and ensures desired results are achieved by means of consistent follow through.
- Demonstrates eligibility for employment in the U.S.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Graduate of approved surgical technician program.
- CST certification preferred
- Minimum of 1-2 years experience in the Operating Room
- Ability to achieve Basic Life Support certification within 60 days of hire.
- Ability to relate and work effectively with others
- Demonstrated skills in verbal and written English communications for safe and effective patient care and to meet documentation standards.
- Willingness to participate in goal-setting and educational activities for own professional advancement.
- Is aware of surgical technician standards and performs in accordance with them.
- Prepares and maintains medical equipment for surgical procedures.
- Before an operation, assists by setting up surgical instruments and equipment, sterile drapes, and sterile solutions.
- Follows hospital regulations and industry procedures to tend to patient during pre-operation procedures.
- Assembles both sterile and non-sterile equipment, and checks to ensure it is working properly.
- Helps position patients on the operating table and cover them with sterile surgical drapes.
- Passes instruments and other sterile supplies to surgeons and surgeon assistants.
- Holds retractors, cuts sutures, and helps count sponges, needles, supplies, and instruments. Helps prepare, care for, and dispose of specimens taken for laboratory analysis and helps apply dressings.
- Operates sterilizers, lights, or suction machines, and assists with diagnostic equipment as needed.
- After an operation, helps transfer patients to the recovery room and clean and restock the operating room.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Ability to be on your feet for long periods and lift or turn disabled patients.
- Requires sitting and standing associated with a normal operating room environment.
- Ability to concentrate for extended periods.
- Ability to communicate verbally in person and on the telephone.
- Ability to use a computer keyboard and view a computer monitor.
Skills and Abilities
- Must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients in the center.
- Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development of the life span and the ability to assess data reflective of the patient’s requirements relative to age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the center’s policies and procedures.
