Overview
Forensic Mechanical Engineer (P.E. Required) – Rimkus
The role provides failure analysis and forensic consulting services requiring mechanical engineering expertise for insurance, legal, industrial, and other clients. Evaluates injury, equipment, and property damage claims caused by alleged issues with products, heavy equipment, machines, HVAC, plumbing, fire suppression, and other mechanical systems. Delivers oral and written reports of findings, technical guidance to clients, and, when needed, expert testimony.
Responsibilities- Performs failure analysis for forensic assignments within the field of mechanical engineering based on a scope and budget prepared by the consultant and agreed upon by the client before performing the work.
- Investigates how and why an incident occurred, including identifying the origin, failure mechanism, root cause, and the role of the mechanical system.
- Inspects sites, products, equipment, and systems; performs electronic data retrieval and analysis; evaluates required laboratory testing; and conducts analyses.
- Reviews and interprets relevant codes, standards, drawings, specifications, manuals, literature, data logs, and other documentation to evaluate design, installation, operation, and maintenance compliance.
- Conducts analyses across areas such as industrial safety and accidents; equipment and machinery design and failure; product liability; and design and safety.
- Provides support on fire and explosion investigations involving mechanical systems, products, and equipment.
- Initiates, develops, and maintains client relationships.
- B.S. Mechanical Engineering or higher.
- P.E. licensed.
- 2-10+ years of experience with knowledge of products, machine design, HVAC, plumbing, fire suppression systems, and/or other mechanical equipment/systems.
- Strong analytical skills with attention to detail; ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
- Effective client interaction at all levels (internal and external).
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and computer-aided engineering/design software.
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical and scientific documents, financial reports, and legal documents.
- Clear writing ability for scopes of work, budgets, schedules, reports, proposals, and correspondence.
- Ability to respond to inquiries from internal and external clients and present information to management, clients, and other stakeholders.
Work in office and field locations; frequent standing, walking, climbing, bending, kneeling, and driving to job sites. May lift up to 50 pounds. Overtime may be required; standard hours are 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, with travel up to 25% (some out-of-area/overnight travel).
Salary range: $130,100 - $195,100, depending on education, experience, location, and licensure.
