Position: FLEET TECHNICIAN

NATURE OF POSITION

Drive, operate, and perform journey-level maintenance and repairs on the City’s fleet of light, medium, and heavy-duty vehicles, public safety and emergency response vehicles, grounds and road maintenance equipment, construction equipment, trailers, compressors, generators, specialty vehicle bodies, and all associated systems that support the assignments within seven departments made up of 28 organizational units; execute emergency mobile and on-site maintenance procedures and inspections;

utilize a variety of software applications that supports the maintenance, management, and functionality of the City’s fleet.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

General direction and oversight are provided by the Fleet Services Supervisor.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities
  • Employees of the City of Walla Walla are expected to model and foster the City’s core values:

  • Perform diagnostics, repairs, services, inspections, and all related activities to the City’s fleet of diesel, gas, and alternative fuel powered vehicles, equipment, and systems.
  • Operate business-specific, system performance, and programming software applications for recording service and repair details; accessing maintenance history and inventories; tracking preventive maintenance schedules; programming onboard technology and assignment-specific systems; diagnosing and troubleshooting faults and failures; payroll and training.
  • Complete upfitting and in-service requirements on newly purchased vehicles and equipment such as on-board kits, decals, communication devices, specialty lighting and attachments, public safety, and emergency vehicle mission essential components, etc.
  • Inspect, troubleshoot, adjust, replace, and repair necessary units and related parts, including engine, transmission, HVAC, suspension, steering, braking, fuel, mechanical, electrical, electronic, hydraulic, hydrostatic, pneumatic, and multiplex system components.
  • Service and maintain police vehicles, fire engines, ambulances, refuse collections trucks, underground inspection/maintenance units, dump/plow trucks, service trucks, street sweepers, pavers, applicators, tractors, utility task vehicles, mowers, grounds conditioning units, rollers, dozers, graders, loaders, backhoes, and compactors.
  • Repair required mission critical equipment such as data and communications equipment, lighting and siren systems, alarms, power supply, circuit/switch boards, and distributors.
  • Utilize paper and electronic manuals, diagrams, schematics, and guidelines as recommended by the manufacturer to comply with the requirement to maintain each asset in the City’s fleet.
  • Repair and replace vehicle and equipment tires, mount and balance tires for City fleet.
  • Perform welding duties including fabrication and repair of damaged equipment as needed.
  • Operate all City owned vehicles and equipment to assess performance and safety, for recovery operations, and for pre- and post-maintenance evaluations.
  • Respond to emergency road and on-site calls as necessary; may be subject to call-back for emergencies or assigned 24-hour on-call.
  • Complete research, purchasing, and procurement requirement for maintenance and repair parts and materials, while maintaining professional communication with all fleet related manufacturers, vendors, and suppliers.
  • Attend monthly safety, staff, and operational meetings.
  • May serve as backup during any absence of the Fleet Services Lead.
