OverviewThe Department of Corrections Reentry Division is hiring an On-Call Cook 2 position at Helen
B. Ratcliff Reentry Center. The Cook 2 is an in‑training role that may be appointed at Cook 1 or Cook 2 level, depending on qualifications. This recruitment may fill future non‑permanent and permanent positions.
The Cook prepares and serves nutritionally balanced meals for the resident population, following state and federal regulations and the department’s certified meal plan.
Benefits- Employees assigned to a permanent duty station in King County receive a 5% premium pay based on base salary.

ResponsibilitiesAs a Cook 2, you will perform the following duties:
- Prepare and serve food on a shift, including mathematical calculations to match recipes and portion control.
- Ensure quality standards and safety protocols, including rethermalization and waste reduction.
- Prepare special diets (medical or religious) and maintain personal hygiene.
- Keep work surfaces and equipment clean per health department standards.
- Track knife and tool inventory.
- Maintain accurate food inventories, ensuring rotation and proper storage.
- Receive, store, and distribute raw and prepared foods, chemicals, and cleaning supplies.
- Submit work orders and repair requests.
- Execute tool and key control per policy and ensure safe operation of kitchen equipment.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Two (2) years’ cooking experience in a large‑scale food service or culinary operation, or one year of experience plus a large‑scale cooking course.
- OR one (1) year as a Cook 1 in state service.
- Current food handler permit required.
- Ability to cook a variety of foods, follow instructions, read and estimate quantities, communicate verbally, schedule work, and operate kitchen equipment safely.
- Supervise, coach, and train residents in kitchen operations.
- Variety of foods and alternate preparation methods.
- Basic arithmetic and food service record keeping.
- Food service practices, HACCP protocols, and safety practices.
- Weights and measures, and rethermalization procedures.
