Job Summary

Responsibilities
  • Conduct standardized interviews to collect watercraft conveyance information and history for record upload into the multi‑state WID database using an iOS tablet or agency issued laptop.
  • Follow watercraft inspection guidelines per Watercraft Inspection Technician (WIT) 1–2 trainings, including proper preservation of suspected AIS.
  • Perform full decontaminations with a pressurized hot‑water decontamination unit when aquatic invasive species are detected.
  • Educate the public on Clean, Drain, Dry practices and AIS.
  • Maintain electronic reader boards and signage at inspection stations.
  • Complete and submit weekly activity reports.
  • Clean restrooms, pick up litter, and perform routine maintenance on vehicles, electronic reader boards, tablets, landscaping tools, and equipment.
Working Conditions

Work is performed primarily outdoors at watercraft inspection and decontamination stations, often in inclement weather conditions. The position may involve working in or near water, handling hot decontamination equipment, cleaning agents, and occasional contact with aquatic organisms. Employees will stand for extended periods, perform repetitive tasks, operate vehicles and equipment, and may lift materials up to 75 lbs.

Schedule

Work 4 consecutive 10‑hour shifts (40 hrs/wk). Shifts are scheduled any day from Monday through Sunday, with potential for evening, weekend, and holiday work depending on business needs and weather.

Travel Requirements

Frequent travel to various watercraft inspection and decontamination stations within the region, with occasional travel to other parts of the state for training or to support program operations. Employees must be able to operate state vehicles.

Tools and Equipment

Transport and operate a trailered electronic reader board, hot‑water pressure washer, and a one‑ton 4x4 truck. Operate and maintain inspection and decontamination tools, hoses, pumps, sprayers, and protective gear. Use a personal computer, smartphone, and iPad for data entry and communication.

Customer Interactions

Engage the public at mandatory check stations for trailered watercraft and decontaminations of infested AIS watercraft. May encounter non‑compliant or uncooperative individuals.

Required Qualifications
  • One year of experience as a Natural Resource Worker 2; or
  • Two years of college‑level work in fish, wildlife, habitat management, agriculture, forestry, or a natural resource science; or
  • Two years of professional experience related to aquatic invasive species, field inspection, biosecurity practices, and/or handling and decontaminating equipment; or
  • A combination of relevant college‑level coursework and/or professional experience totaling two years.

Certifications/Licenses: Valid Driver’s License.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in fish, wildlife, habitat management, agriculture, forestry, or a natural resource science.
  • Two years of experience as a Natural Resource Worker 2.
  • One year of professional experience in watercraft inspection.
Additional Certifications
  • Watercraft Inspection Technician 1 (WIT Level
    1) Certification
  • Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) Roadside Safety certification
