Overview
Industrial Insurance Underwriter (IIU4) – Employer Services Division, Insurance Services, Department of Labor & Industries (L&I), Washington.
We are looking for experienced underwriters to independently underwrite and manage state‑fund workers’ compensation policies across a wide range of industry hazards. The role provides expert consultative and technical support to employers, representatives, and other agency divisions while interpreting laws and regulations and ensuring compliance.
Responsibilities- Coach, mentor and serve as a technical expert to a team of underwriters, ensuring compliance with production, quality standards, and risk classification assignment. Perform quality assurance and audit tasks with written evaluation.
- Underwrite industrial insurance workers’ compensation policies governed by Title 51 RCW and WAC 296‑17 and 296‑17A for over 300 risk classifications.
- Adjudicate industrial insurance claim coverage per RCW 51.12, determining employer/employee relationships, independent contractor status, and claim jurisdiction.
- Additional related duties as required.
Required:
- Bachelor’s degree in a field involving tax liabilities, insurance benefits, risk classification, accounting or bookkeeping, research, statistical or management analysis or a related field.
- One year of experience as an Industrial Insurance Underwriter 3 (or equivalent experience in direct customer service; additional qualifying experience may substitute).
- Demonstrated ability to learn and grow; ability to meet the needs of others.
Desired:
- Knowledge of underwriting, insurance, auditing and accounting principles.
- In‑depth understanding of laws, regulations, wage and employment practices, department operations, and evolving industry policies.
