Overview
Washington Soldiers Home – Washington State Department of Veterans Affairs (WDVA) – is accepting applications for a Nursing Assistant Certified, full time non-permanent, to support our mission of "Serving Those Who Served" by providing essential quality of life care for our Veterans.
PositionNursing Assistant Certified – Full Time-Non-Permanent. This position is located at the Washington Soldiers Home. Homes 24/7 facility differential pay:
Updated as of July 1, 2025, eligible for the Supplemental Basic Shift Premium for 24/7 facilities. The shift premium is $1.00 per hour for each hour of basic shift premium for on-site duties (not applicable to overtime). Supplemental premium expires June 29, 2027.

Schedule:
Saturday through Wednesday, 2:00 pm to 10:30 pm.
Hybrid/Telework: Not eligible for hybrid telework.
WDVA serves nearly 500,000 veterans and their families. Our four State Veterans Homes (Orting, Port Orchard, Spokane, and Walla Walla) provide Medicare and Medicaid nursing home care to honorably discharged veterans and eligible family members.
Responsibilities- Assist residents with positioning, transferring and ambulation while maintaining a safe environment and practicing infection control.
- Respond to call lights, emergencies, and facility codes.
- Record care, vital signs and observations.
- Assist residents with activities of daily living, including bathing, dressing, grooming and hygiene.
- Assist with therapies and treatments under licensed personnel; facilitate motion exercises as needed.
- Obtain and record vital signs and other resident data; document intake/output.
- Perform basic nursing procedures as directed (e.g., applying anti-embolism stockings, creams/lotions, specimen collection).
- Additional duties as required.
- Current and valid Washington State Nursing Assistant Certification.
- Current active status on OBRA (Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act) check.
- Proficiency in English (reading, writing and speaking).
- High School graduation or GED.
- At least 6 months of experience in customer service in a health care setting or direct patient care (six months).
A combination of education and experience may be considered on a year-for-year basis. Experience must be relevant to the position.
- Ability to perform data entry.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality at all times.
- Ability to provide a positive living environment for residents, follow written and verbal directions, and document/report observed changes in patient condition and behavior.
- Accurate methods and practices to assist residents with activities of daily care, personal hygiene, sanitation, record keeping, reporting changes, infection control, and residents’ rights.
- Pass a DSHS BCCU Background Check every two years per WDVA Policy 615.000. Information will be considered in determining suitability and competence.
- Compliance with annual Tuberculin Screening per policy 670.000.
- Ability to wear respirators and use PPE as required; meet safety standards.
- Physical ability to lift up to 60 lbs and reach 36"; able to walk, sit and bend as needed.
- Maintain a valid practical nursing license (State of Washington).
- Regular and reliable attendance; willingness to work as needed.
- Complete mandatory orientation and annual trainings.
- Familiarity with DVA policies, procedures and applicable CBAs.
- Confidentiality agreement required.
- Travel may be required; valid unrestricted driver’s license and vehicle insurance if driving on state business.
