OpportunityWSDOT is seeking a Transportation Engineer 3 to serve as a Structural Laboratory Testing Engineer for the State Materials Laboratory in Tumwater, WA. The role will oversee laboratory testing programs, daily operations, scheduling, training, and quality assurance while acting as a technical specialist. The candidate will apply agency policies, standards, and engineering principles with minimal supervision and will represent the Department in meetings with external agencies and consultants.
Responsibilities- Schedule, prioritize, and coordinate testing across the steel, concrete, and aggregate laboratories.
- Ensure tester qualifications and equipment verifications are current and qualified in all assigned laboratories.
- Run diagnostic tests, analyze data, and produce accurate test reports using specialized software.
- Collaborate with project engineers and external agencies to establish testing parameters and report requirements.
- Prepare, review, and correct data entries performed by technicians and engineers.
- Coordinate inter‑laboratory testing and training initiatives.
- Assist in calibration and verification of testing equipment.
- Maintain equipment calibration and compliance records.
- Proficiency in aggregate, concrete, and steel testing procedures.
- Ability to schedule and coordinate multiple laboratory testing activities.
- Extensive knowledge of laboratory equipment operation, troubleshooting, calibration, and maintenance.
- Experience in accurate data management, analysis, and reporting.
- Demonstrated experience supervising, training, and reviewing technicians and engineers.
- Strong organizational skills for tracking samples and maintaining records.
- Excellent written and verbal communication and presentation skills.
- Knowledge of and commitment to laboratory safety policies.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office and laboratory software applications.
- Demonstrated growth mindset and service‑oriented attitude.
- Physical ability to maneuver and transport materials up to 50 pounds and handle chemicals and temperatures up to 325 °F.
- Experience with advanced materials testing such as hot mix asphalt or soils.
- Knowledge of quality assurance principles and laboratory accreditation standards.
- Ability to develop, refine, and implement laboratory test procedures.
- Experience coordinating with project engineers, contractors, and external agencies.
- Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills.
- Leadership skills that foster teamwork and continuous improvement.
- Willingness to cross‑train in additional testing disciplines.
