Position: Speech Language Pathologist starting the 2026-2027 School Year

Purpose Statement

The SLP will provide speech, language, hearing and augmentative communication services for individuals and small groups in developmental and remedial models; consult with parents and teachers of children with communication disabilities; provide consultation and related services for students needing accommodations in school settings.

Essential Functions
  • Manage and organize the specialized materials, equipment and environment essential to the speech and language program.
  • Provide educationally related communication intervention for students disabled by disorders of language, speech or hearing in a variety of settings as appropriate.
  • Assess speech and language skills of students suspected of having a communication disorder and consult with teachers in developing IEP goals and objectives.
  • Provide resources, modeling strategies and training to other team members in communication interventions.
  • Communicate regularly the results of individual student assessment and progress with involved school staff (special and general education), parents and where appropriate the students.
  • Design and implement in-class interventions (small groups, large groups and/or individual).
  • Increase knowledge/skills related to communication intervention in the schools through participation in continuing education and in-service opportunities.
  • Work effectively as a team member (i.e. multidisciplinary team, IEP committee, integrative classroom team, etc.) in various settings.
Reporting Relationships

Reports to the Director of Special Education and building administrators as appropriate.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience
  • Valid Washington State ESA certification in Speech Language Pathology.
  • Master’s degree in Communication Speech/Language Pathology.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge/awareness of own cultural identity and how this influences behavior, and desire to learn about the cultural identity of others.
  • Ability to establish and nurture an environment that promotes cultural competence and equitable treatment of staff, students, and patrons of the district.
  • Knowledge of SEL practices and approaches.
  • Knowledge of theory and content in the speech and language field and in the area of assistive technology.
  • Experience and training in diagnosis and therapeutic intervention of articulation, expressive and receptive language, fluency, and voice with students ages 3-21.
  • Working knowledge of strategies and accommodations to support students in inclusion settings.
  • Knowledge and/or experience with different languages, language development and cultural diversity.
  • Experience with a variety of diagnostic instruments appropriate for students.
  • Skill and experience working with students who use augmentative and adaptive communication strategies and devices.
  • Experience in writing Individual Education Programs (IEPs), including working knowledge of social and behavioral language goals, specific task analysis skills, and ability to write measurable annual goals and objectives.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of learning and behavioral needs of students.
  • Demonstrated successful experience developing programs of prevention, instruction, remediation and/or evaluation, in implementing in-class service delivery, and providing direct educationally related services in areas of speech and language.
  • Demonstrated strength in working on a building special services team which includes general and special education staff, parents, students and community agencies.
  • Experience and/or training with cultural, ethnic, language and learning diversity is desired.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.
Licenses/Special Requirements
  • Must maintain all licenses and certifications as a condition of continued employment.
  • Valid Washington State driver’s License and access to personal transportation.
  • Completed employment application/background check.
  • Must complete Walla Walla Public Schools Risk Management and Bloodborne Pathogens Training upon hire.
