Join ALS as a Microbiology Team Leader and lead our global lab team in water testing and microbiology.

The Role

As Team Leader, you will guide a skilled lab team, support operations, and ensure exceptional results for our clients while building your own leadership and technical expertise.

Location & Working Hours
  • Location: Ossett, Wakefield
  • Shift: Monday to Friday – rotational shift between 8‑16 and 13‑21, 37 hours per week
  • On‑Call: Occasional weekend and evening cover required
  • Contract: Full Time, Permanent
  • Salary: From £29,690 (dependent on experience), WPPS allowance
  • Closing Date: Wednesday 14th Jan 2025 at 12 noon
The Day‑to‑Day
  • Lead and motivate a team of lab and senior technicians to ensure smooth, efficient day-to-day operations.
  • Process potable and waste microbiology samples while maintaining the highest standards of quality and compliance.
  • Keep the department audit‑ready at all times.
  • Collaborate across departments to foster a culture of safety, accuracy, and continuous improvement.
  • Provide guidance and mentorship, championing staff development and inspiring others.
  • Spearhead the digitisation of the microbiology department.
  • Act as the key contact for routine client communications, strengthening our reputation for reliability and technical excellence, including daily reporting of critical results.
  • Bring a proactive, supportive attitude to work every day and seek solutions to problems.
The Essentials
  • Strong science background, proven through work experience and/or academic qualifications.
  • Experience in a fast‑paced, high‑throughput laboratory environment (microbiology preferred).
  • A proactive, solution‑focused mindset with a genuine passion for staff development.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
  • Competence in Microsoft Office, especially Excel.
  • A positive, can‑do attitude and a strong desire to lead and support others.
  • Driving licence and own car.
  • Royal Society of Biology membership preferred.
