Refuse Collector; BC-

Collects refuse on an assigned route as a member of a refuse collection crew; and performs other duties as required.

Distinguishing Characteristics:

This class differs from the Refuse Collection Crew Leader classes in that the Refuse Collector collects refuse on an assigned route as a member of a refuse collection crew under the supervision of a Refuse Collection Crew Leader; whereas the Refuse Collection Crew Leader operates a truck and supervises a crew of refuse collectors on an assigned route in the collection and disposal of refuse.

This class differs from the classes in the General Laborer series in that the Refuse Collector performs sustained heavy manual work of an unpleasant nature in the collection and disposal of refuse; whereas classes in the General Laborer series perform a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled manual work not requiring the performance of sustained heavy manual work.

The following are examples of duties and are not necessarily descriptive of any one position in this class. The omission of specific duties statements does not preclude management from assigning such duties if such duties are a logical assignment for the position.

• Collects rubbish and trash from residential and commercial establishments;
• Lifts containers onto the trucks;
• Receives and empties containers in the truck;
• Returns containers to proper places;
• Uses tools to pitch grass or shrubbery bundles onto truck;
• Stacks refuse on truck to prevent spilling or blowing onto roadway;
• Accompanies truck to landfill and assists in unloading of refuse;
• Washes and cleans truck;
• Picks up dead animals from highway;
• May drive truck in absence of regular driver;
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Training and

Experience:

A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to completion of the eighth grade and one year of general laborer work experience.

Ability to: perform heavy manual labor; understand and follow oral instructions; deal tactfully and effectively with the public.
