Position: School Health Assistant I, II - Iao Intermediate

Overview

Description School Health Assistant I and II are considered full-time at 6½ hours per day. The authorized level of the position is School Health Assistant II. Applications are being accepted down to the School Health Assistant I in the event of recruiting difficulties.

Salary Range
:
School Health Assistant I, SR-09: $2,356.02 per month;
School Health Assistant II, SR-11: $2,549.00 per month.

Responsibilities
  • Administers emergency first aid care to ill or injured students.
  • Takes temperature, allows students to rest in health room as necessary, and periodically observes and talks to students to determine symptoms of illness.
  • May administer oral and topical medications only in accordance with strict program guidelines (i.e., parental request, physician’s order, school health nurse’s approval, and school administration approval).
  • Contact parents or guardians of ill or injured students to inform them of their child’s illness or injury as necessary.
  • May call for ambulance service in emergencies.
  • Under direction of the school health nurse, performs health-related screening tests (e.g., hearing and vision) and participates in health surveys; takes throat swabs in rheumatic fever surveys and measures height and weight as needed.
  • Completes appropriate records; refers health records indicating health problems to the school health nurse.
  • Makes visual surveys of school buildings and grounds to identify hazards and collaborates with the school health nurse and principal to address hazardous conditions.
  • May provide basic health instruction to students.
  • May orient and supervise volunteers to assist in conducting screening tests.
  • May render emergency first aid care to school staff; administers CPR as necessary.
  • Maintains a clean health room with adequate supplies and equipment.
  • Provides resource information to school staff and recognizes at-risk symptoms for referral.
  • Acts as liaison between home, school, and community in collaborative health services/activities.
  • Coordinates health-related speakers to aid class curriculum when requested.
  • Disseminates and coordinates information to employees on wellness activities/events for staff as directed by the school principal.
  • Advocates a positive health and wellness program for the school.
Minimum Qualifications

Basic

Education Requirements:

Possession of a high school diploma, or equivalent, with the ability to read, comprehend and apply written instructions, and a high level of verbal skill.

Experience Requirements: Exceptions and substitutions apply per the specification. Applicants must have the experience described below and in the table below:

  • General Experience
    :
    Work experience involving working with people, establishing and maintaining relationships, observing/supervising activities of individuals for medical or therapeutic purposes, counseling, screening, or serving as an informational resource; may include teaching, leadership in community groups, or other team-based activities. Must be continuous and may be paid or volunteer.
  • Specialized Experience
    :
    Experience demonstrating basic health knowledge and practices (e.g., hygiene, sanitary practices, symptoms of common illnesses) and ability to use a computer/data processing systems. Examples include homemaker work with child care, para-medical/nurse’s aide, homecare facilities operator, or similar roles.
Substitutions Allowed
  • Bachelor’s or associate’s degree in nursing or related field may substitute for one year of general experience and two years of specialized experience.
  • Community college program in medical assisting, human service, practical nursing, or similar curriculum may substitute for one year of general experience and one year of specialized experience.
  • Formal coursework in health and personal hygiene, child care, and home management may substitute for one year of specialized experience.
Certification Requirement

Current certifications in First Aid and Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) or equivalent are required at time of employment. If yes, submit copies of valid, unexpired certifications.
