Principal Geotechnical Engineer / Associate
Ground Consultants Limited (GCL) is a well-established geo‑environmental and geotechnical consultancy operating across Cornwall, the South West and wider UK. Due to continued growth, we seek a highly experienced Principal Geotechnical Engineer / Associate to play a key role in the technical and operational delivery of the business.
RoleThe successful candidate will sit at the heart of the company, with responsibilities including:
- Leading and overseeing multiple geotechnical projects of varying scale and complexity
- Preparing and reviewing fee proposals and technical scopes of work
- Technical review and quality assurance of geotechnical reports
- Providing senior technical input across ground investigation, interpretation, and design
- Acting as a key technical point of contact for clients, contractors, and design teams
- Mentoring and supporting junior and mid‑level staff
- Supporting business operations and strategic decision‑making as part of the senior team
Applicants must demonstrate strong experience in:
- Conventional shallow foundation design
- Piled foundations (including interpretation and derivation of design parameters)
- Earthworks specifications and validation
- Slope stability assessment and design
- Interpretation of ground investigation data in accordance with BS 5930, BS 10175 and Eurocode 7
- Chartered Engineer or Chartered Geologist (CEng / CGeol)
- Minimum 10 years’ post‑graduate experience in geotechnical engineering
- Strong consultancy background with proven project leadership experience
- High technical standards and attention to detail
- Ability to work autonomously and manage competing priorities
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Experience working within the geology of Cornwall and the wider South West
- Experience operating at Principal or Associate level
- Commercial awareness and involvement in fee management and programme control
