Principal Geotechnical Engineer / Associate

Ground Consultants Limited (GCL) is a well-established geo‑environmental and geotechnical consultancy operating across Cornwall, the South West and wider UK. Due to continued growth, we seek a highly experienced Principal Geotechnical Engineer / Associate to play a key role in the technical and operational delivery of the business.

The successful candidate will sit at the heart of the company, with responsibilities including:

• Leading and overseeing multiple geotechnical projects of varying scale and complexity
• Preparing and reviewing fee proposals and technical scopes of work
• Technical review and quality assurance of geotechnical reports
• Providing senior technical input across ground investigation, interpretation, and design
• Acting as a key technical point of contact for clients, contractors, and design teams
• Mentoring and supporting junior and mid‑level staff
• Supporting business operations and strategic decision‑making as part of the senior team

Applicants must demonstrate strong experience in:

• Conventional shallow foundation design
• Piled foundations (including interpretation and derivation of design parameters)
• Earthworks specifications and validation
• Slope stability assessment and design
• Interpretation of ground investigation data in accordance with BS 5930, BS 10175 and Eurocode 7

• Chartered Engineer or Chartered Geologist (CEng / CGeol)
• Minimum 10 years’ post‑graduate experience in geotechnical engineering
• Strong consultancy background with proven project leadership experience
• High technical standards and attention to detail
• Ability to work autonomously and manage competing priorities
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills

• Experience working within the geology of Cornwall and the wider South West
• Experience operating at Principal or Associate level
• Commercial awareness and involvement in fee management and programme control
