Responsibilities
  • The Registered Nurse assumes primary leadership accountability and responsibility for milieu management and directing patient care activities of other nursing staff.
  • The Registered Nurse maintains standards of professional nursing practice in accordance with facility policy and procedures, external governing and credentialing bodies, performance improvement standards, and psychiatric nursing standards.
  • The Registered Nurse assesses the patient utilizing the nursing process to formulate an individualized plan of care, implements interventions, and evaluates outcomes.
  • The Registered Nurse interprets age/disability specific information in response to client population served.
  • The Registered Nurse provides for the safe delivery of medication in accordance with policies and procedures and physicians orders.
  • The Registered Nurse is responsible for thorough, accurate reporting and documentation of the patient’s symptoms, responses, and progress.
  • The Registered Nurse assumes responsibility for professional development, continuing education and licensure maintenance.
  • All duties are performed in accordance with Joint Commission, Federal and State regulations, Oceans' Mission, policies and procedures, and Performance Improvement Standards.
  • Float among various clinical services, where qualified and competent, and perform other duties and projects as assigned.
Essential Functions
  • Uses the nursing process: assessment, planning, intervention, implementation, and evaluation to develop an individualized plan of care.
  • Identifies risk levels, precautions and expected outcomes; conducts ongoing assessment from admission to discharge; initiates crisis intervention to stabilize patient conditions.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of psychiatric disorders and applies appropriate nursing interventions to progress the patient toward wellness.
  • Administers medications as prescribed safely and provides education on prescribed medications; recognizes signs of adverse drug reactions.
  • Maintains professionalism, accountability, and responsibility for nursing care and knowledge base.
  • Reviews and updates medical records; transcribes and implements physician orders; documents care and progress accurately and concisely.
  • Ensures continuity of care by communicating needs and incomplete assignments to staff.
  • Coordinates staff assignments and delegation; advocates for patient needs and safety.
  • Utilizes nursing resources to enhance evidence-based practice and meets facility and patient needs.
Educational / Experience Requirements
  • Current, valid, and active license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state of employment.
  • Valid Compact licenses are acceptable where applicable.
  • Minimum of an Associate Degree in Nursing is required.
  • One year of inpatient hospital experience strongly preferred.
Qualifications / Skills Requirements
  • Ability to adapt to a high-stress environment and assess potential for patient escalation.
  • Effective communication, both oral and written, with internal and external customers; highly organized and culturally sensitive to diverse populations.
  • Critical thinking abilities and commitment to continuous improvement of patient care.
  • Demonstrates self-confidence and the ability to lead and direct others.
  • Must successfully complete CPR certification and an Oceans-approved behavioral health de-escalation program.
Work Environment

Subject to interruptions. 12-hour rotating shifts. Can be high-paced and stressful; must cope mentally and physically in the atmosphere. May involve disagreeable odors, sights, and/or unpredictable patient behavior. Typically spend 90% or more of time inside a building that provides protection from weather conditions but not necessarily from temperature changes.
