Position: Engineering Assistant I, II, or III Structural Materials Section

Engaged in providing direct engineering support for Texas roadways, this role works alongside field inspection personnel across Texas, focusing on precast prestressed concrete, structural steel, and non-bridge steel. The Engineering Assistant (EA) assists with quality assurance of structural prefabricated materials, evaluates fabrication plant operations, and supports TxDOT’s 25 districts to ensure compliance with specifications.

Key Responsibilities

Engineering Assistants at all levels perform construction inspection, material sampling and testing, engineering–related calculations, data collection, evaluation, and analysis. Supervised by a licensed professional engineer, they review construction plans, support design work, and assist in training less experienced personnel.

Engineering Assistant I
  • Actively prepares for professional engineering licensing/registration through training, exams, and documentation.
  • Applies engineering principles to transportation‑related activities.
  • Participates in the Career Development program (job rotation, training, continuing education).
  • Performs construction inspection and material sampling/testing.
  • Conducts engineering-related calculations, data collection, evaluation, and analysis.
  • Reviews construction plans prepared by consultants.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Engineering Assistant II
  • Performs advanced and specialized engineering design work.
  • Assists in training less experienced engineering assistants, specialists, and/or technicians.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Engineering Assistant III
  • Trains less experienced engineering assistants, specialists, and technicians.
  • Might serve as a lead worker in related tasks.
  • Performs engineering‑related data collection, evaluation, and analysis activities.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Acceptable Substitutions (All Levels)
  • Master’s degree in engineering or a Master of Engineering degree from an institution that offers a bachelor of science degree in the same accredited discipline may substitute for a bachelor’s degree.
  • Doctoral degree in engineering or a doctor of engineering degree from an accredited institution may substitute for a bachelor’s degree.
Additional Acceptable Substitution for Engineering Assistant III
  • Experience:

    Passing the Professional Engineer (PE) exam prior to obtaining requisite experience for PE licensure may substitute for two (2) years of engineering‑related work experience.
Experience
  • Engineering Assistant I:
    No work experience required; no supervisory experience required.
  • Engineering Assistant II: 1 year of engineering‑related experience (full‑time or prorated part‑time); no supervisory experience required.
  • Engineering Assistant III: 2 years of engineering‑related experience; no supervisory experience required.
Licenses and Certifications
  • Valid driver’s license; position requires driving a state vehicle.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Has passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam.
