Role Overview

As the Heavy Equipment Shop Supervisor, you will guide a team of Diesel Mechanics responsible for minor and major repairs and maintenance of heavy equipment vehicles (i.e., snow‑fighting equipment and dump trucks), light vehicles (roadside trucks), and tools. You will assist the diesel mechanics in diagnosing and resolving problems, inspecting completed work and equipment, and ensuring compliance with current procedures and safety practices.

Additionally, you may also perform major overhauls of gasoline or diesel engines, and repair difficult and complex automotive problems (i.e., replacement or repair of pistons, rings, crankshafts, medium and heavy‑duty automatic transmissions, single and twin counter shaft manual transmissions). The ideal candidate for the role will have knowledge and expertise in maintenance repairs and supervision of direct reports.

Location

This position is located in INDOT’s Linton Shop.

Mechanic Positions

Candidates with a current CDL will earn an additional $1 per hour for this position. Candidates without a CDL will be given 90 days to obtain their CDL, with training and reimbursement provided by INDOT, and will then earn an additional $1 per hour upon successfully obtaining their CDL. INDOT also provides a generous Standard Hand Tool Reimbursement of up to $1,500 per year for full‑time Mechanic positions for the purchase, replacement and repair of tools required for maintenance and repair activities related to INDOT’s fleet of transportation vehicles, snow and ice management equipment, road maintenance equipment and all other fleet items.

Salary

This position traditionally starts at an annual salary of $53,222.00. Salary for this position may be commensurate with education and job experience.

A Day in the Life
  • Diagnoses electronic engine control systems (e.g., engine control modules, anti‑lock brake systems, medium and heavy‑duty automatic transmission engine control modules) using scan tools, laptop computers, and available software.
  • Repairs systems using up‑to‑date diagnostic equipment.
  • Identifies, troubleshoots, and repairs or replaces engine electronic sensors.
  • Troubleshoots, repairs, and calibrates central hydraulic system control units used in highway salt applications.
  • Test drives a variety of motorized equipment (e.g., dump trucks, backhoes, tandem axle dump trucks, front‑end loaders, and combinations of vehicles with a gross combination weight rating of 26,001 lbs. or more, where GVWR of the vehicles being towed is in excess of 10,000 lbs, etc.).
  • Repairs, rebuilds, and/or replaces minor and major parts (e.g., electrical system components, alternators, water or fuel pumps, clutches, brake systems).
  • Adjusts valves and performs preventative maintenance and service on vehicles and equipment.
  • Performs miscellaneous mechanic work (e.g., body repair work, repair or replace tires, cleans or replaces diesel injectors, provides service and repair of vehicles and equipment on an emergency basis).
  • Schedules maintenance and repair of equipment.
  • Maintains repair or service records.
