Installation Technician, Maintenance Technician / Mechanic
Description
The Commercial and International Group at Leidos currently has an opening for a System Installation Technician – Ports and Borders Systems to work at Ports of Entry globally. This role focuses on installing and upgrading Non‑Intrusive Inspection (NII) systems for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and other government entities. You will travel to customer sites (generally a port of entry) to install, test, and troubleshoot NII Leidos products.
This position requires 100% weekly travel, primarily domestic with potential international travel, and flexible work schedules including days, nights, and holidays. Strong communication skills, ethical conduct, and a team‑oriented mindset are essential.
- Installs and commissions Mid‑Energy Portals (MEP) and Low Energy Portals (LEP), IP6500 Vehicle and Cargo Inspection Systems (VACIS), Exploranium, and Radiation Portal Monitor (RPM) systems.
- Travels to customer sites for installation, troubleshooting, and repair of complex equipment and systems.
- Provides maintenance and technical support for products, subsystems, and software at customer locations.
- Supports engineering activities during Factory Acceptance testing and site acceptance testing.
- Supports manufacturing activities when not traveling.
- Maintains and calibrates tools and test equipment.
- Executes tasks assigned by the team leader or manager on schedule.
- Works with team members to achieve successful equipment and system installations.
- Identifies equipment start‑up malfunctions and implements corrective actions.
- Performs ad‑hoc and predetermined work assignments with instructions.
- May work on equipment with limited documentation or training.
- Follows all established guidelines, procedures, and policies.
- Assesses product/equipment performance and recommends improvements.
- May be required to work on challenging international projects for short durations.

- Current U.S. Citizen with a valid U.S. Passport in hand by hire date.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- 2+ years of experience in field or installation service environments.
- Pass criminal background check, drug test, and extensive credit check.
- Physically able to work in narrow spaces, climb ladders/stairs, and lift 50+ lbs without assistance. Frequent bending, stooping, twisting, and turning required.
- Valid U.S. Driver's License with Real .
- Related trade experience (electrical, mechanical) or military training in electrical/electronic and mechanical systems.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience troubleshooting and repairing field electrical and electronic systems.
- Prior knowledge of X‑ray equipment and systems is a plus.
- Excellent communications skills and strong orientation for teamwork.
- Willingness and ability to travel on short notice.
- Safe work practices in extreme environments (temperature, humidity, noise, confined spaces, etc.).
- Ability to interpret electrical drawings and schematics.
- Ability to lift 50 lbs.
- 75% travel required.
- Network installation and configuration, PLC experience, and previous field electrical assembly experience are pluses.
- Software integration with electric/mechanical equipment.
- Work is typically off‑site, at the customer location. Installation will occur at ports of entry (land border crossings or maritime ports) or other required sites, with up to 100% travel.
