Description

DEFINITION: Under general supervision, this technical level position provides procedural and paralegal review of family law and/or probate matters to ensure that all case files are complete, accurate, and in compliance with statutes and local rules.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

  • General supervision given by Family Law Facilitator or higher-level manager.
Essential Functions

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (Essential duties may vary from position to position within this classification. Reasonable accommodation will be made when requested and determined by the Court to be appropriate under applicable law.)

  • Interview petitioners/plaintiffs and respondents/defendants to clarify.
  • Inform concerned parties of laws, regulations, and procedures of the Court.
  • Assist in the completion and submission of legal forms.
  • Review files to ensure that documentation is procedurally correct and in compliance with appropriate laws and local rules and notes deficiencies.
  • Contact attorneys and petitioners to resolve problems and issues.
  • Perform legal research of statutes and case law pertaining to probate or family law matters, and brief the judge regarding unusual cases prior to hearing.
  • Prepare summary documentation, set forth the facts of each matter before the court, summarize the legal factors and any issues and makes recommendations for action.
  • Grant cases that meet established criteria, are legally and procedurally sufficient, and that have no outstanding issues; review cases for final discharge; ensure appropriate distribution by posting on court’s website.
  • Research and monitor changes to probate and family law; recommend policy and procedural changes required for compliance, and institute such modifications after approval.
  • Maintain judicial libraries by ordering, reconciling, shelving and distributing materials.
  • Complete annual and bi/annual financial line item reviews and audits of estates, trusts, guardian ships, and conservatorships.
  • Prepare correspondence in response to client inquiries.
  • Attend staff and other work-related meetings, workshops, seminars, and other continuing education opportunities.
  • Serve as a representative of the Court, displaying courtesy, tact, consideration and discretion in all interactions with other members of the Court community and with the public.

    Education and Experience: The combination of education and experience listed as follows are the minimum qualifications:

    • Education: Completion of an approved legal paraprofessional training program, with possession of a paralegal certificate preferred.
    • Experience: At least three (3) years' experience researching and drafting a variety of legal documents, preferably supplemented by course work in legal office practices and business law, with one year of journey level experience as a paralegal preferred.
