Position: Ethnic Studies Full-Time One-Year Temporary Instructor

Job Duties

The successful candidate will:

  • Use a comparative Ethnic Studies approach to teach face‑to‑face/online sections of "Introduction to Ethnic Studies and Social Justice Studies."
  • Teach other Ethnic Studies courses in subfield(s) of specialization such as Black American Studies, American Indian Studies, Chicana and Chicano Studies, and Asian American Studies.
  • Instruct day and evening classes at one or more of the Sequoias Community College District sites:
    Visalia, Hanford and/or Tulare.
  • Use mixed learning and teaching methods appropriate for community college students.
  • Assess student performance and progress through various course assignments.
  • Perform related teaching duties as assigned, including compliance with clerical and administrative responsibilities related to enrollment, attendance, and student drops.
  • Refer students to appropriate support services, programs, and/or resources as needed.
  • Contribute to the development and growth of the Ethnic Studies Department and its Associate Degree for Transfer.
  • Regularly collaborate with Ethnic Studies faculty to assess and revise measurable student learning outcomes.
  • Collaborate on department initiatives, program review, and assessment to improve student learning.
  • Commit to continuous faculty professional learning through trainings, workshops, conferences, district committees, and community involvement.
  • Perform other professional responsibilities, including holding office hours, participating in department/division meetings, and sustaining an atmosphere of social justice that respects diversity district wide.
Qualifications

The candidate must meet the following criteria.

  • Master’s degree in African American Studies, Black Studies, Africana Studies, Latino Studies, La Raza Studies, Chicana/o Studies, Asian American Studies, Native American Studies, or American Indian Studies; or a Master’s in the Ethnic Studies field; or the equivalent (established via the COS equivalency process).
  • Demonstrate sensitivity to, and understanding of, the diverse backgrounds of community college students pursuant to Title 5 §53022.
Desirable Qualifications
  • Proven capacity to teach Ethnic Studies and subfield courses with an antiracist and culturally responsive approach with students of diverse backgrounds, cultures, experiences, and identities, including underserved and non‑traditional students.
  • Specialization in American Indian Studies and/or another subfield of Ethnic Studies.
  • Commitment to create positive race‑conscious intellectual spaces and provide support for students of color, womxn, LGBTQIA+, and historically marginalized groups through teaching and advocacy.
  • Evidence of community organizing and ongoing pedagogical and professional dedication to anti‑racism, equity, inclusion, and social justice.
