Gloucester County Government offers an excellent benefit package that includes health care coverage, leave program and retirement benefits for all regular full‑time employees. Gloucester County participates in the Virginia Retirement System (VRS) which requires a 5% mandatory contribution by employees.
Job ResponsibilitiesUnder supervision, performs specialized semi‑skilled work repairing and replacing water mains and waterlines. Employee serves as a resource to less experienced department employees and reports to the Utility Foreman.
- Installs, maintains, inspects, and repairs water and sewer lines including taps and connections.
- Responds to trouble calls regarding leaks, breaks, low pressure, and water quality/clarity.
- Reads water meters; searches for leaks.
- Assembles pipes and fittings in excavated ditch.
- Repairs manholes.
- Operates sewer cleaning machines and vehicles.
- Exercises fire hydrants, valves, and air release valves to ensure proper functioning of water and wastewater systems.
- Operates backhoe and trenching machine, as needed.
- Responds to after‑hours calls on nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Performs general and preventive maintenance of equipment.
- Performs general maintenance of utility building and grounds.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- High school diploma/GED.
- Three (3) to five (5) years of directly related work experience.
- Any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge, and abilities.
- Valid driver’s license and driving record that meets Gloucester County Driving Standards.
- Pass a post‑offer, pre‑employment physical examination. Position subject to subsequent physical examinations.
- Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) preferred.
