Maintenance Worker – Assateague Island National Seashore

This position is located at Assateague Island National Seashore. Performs simple and routine work involved in the maintenance and repair of grounds, exterior structures, buildings and related utilities, requiring the use of a variety of trade practices associated with occupations such as carpentry, masonry, plumbing, electrical, cement work, painting, and other related trades.

Responsibilities
  • Performs simple and routine maintenance and repair of grounds, exterior structures, buildings, equipment and related utilities.
  • Assists higher graded maintenance workers or tradesmen in the performance of their work.
  • Performs minor carpentry repairs using simple tools (e.g., replacing broken planks on picnic tables, fixing windows with precut stock, adjusting hinges, latches, and catches).
  • Performs minor painting with brush and roller according to specific instructions on projects where appearance is not critical.
  • Performs minor plumbing repairs such as tightening or replacing fittings and fixtures, replacing faucet washers, unplugging drains, and replacing liquid petroleum gas bottles.
  • Receives, unloads, and processes incoming shipments following established procedures; reports discrepancies and damage.
  • Performs routine maintenance on campground sites and trails using hand tools (e.g., re‑grading, resetting barriers).
  • Collects trash and cleans or services chemical toilets, restrooms, and other visitor facilities.
  • Operates a light truck to pick up supplies and transport materials to and from work sites; assists on project work.
  • Operates a forklift to load and unload supplies and light equipment.
Physical Demands

Works from ladders, scaffolds, and platforms; stands, stoops, bends, kneels, climbs, and works in tired and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts, carries, and sets up parts and equipment that weigh up to 40 pounds.

Work Environment

Work is performed inside and outside where dirt, spray, and fumes are present. Also required to work in inclement weather (heat over 90°F, wind, rain, humidity, biting insects, cold) and/or wear protective equipment and clothing that are sometimes heavy and uncomfortable.

Conditions of Employment
  • U.S. Citizenship required.
  • Appointment subject to background investigation.
  • Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males.
  • Requires participation in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.
  • Muss possess a valid State‑issued driver’s license; may need to operate a government or private vehicle, a four‑wheel drive vehicle, and submit driving records.
  • Must wear a uniform and comply with NPS uniform standards (uniform allowance provided).
  • May be required to work on‑call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime, and shift work.
  • Applicants must be at least 18 years old or 16 years old and meet a high‑school completion or equivalent requirement.
  • Government housing may be available.
Qualifications
  • Ability to do the work of the position with normal supervision (screen‑out).
  • Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, and blueprints.
  • Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment.
  • Knowledge of equipment assembly, installation, and repair.
  • Knowledge of materials and technical practices.
  • Use of measuring instruments.
Volunteer Experience

Volunteer work through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, Ameri Corps) and other organizations provides valuable experience and is credited.

Education

There is no substitution of education for experience for WG positions.

Additional Information

This announcement may be used to fill additional positions if identical vacancies occur within 90 days.

Temporary seasonal employees may maintain non‑competitive rehire eligibility under specific hour limits.
