Job SummaryThe Bedford County Sheriff's Office is seeking a dedicated and experienced School Resource Officer (SRO) to provide direct services within the Bedford County School System
. This full-time position ensures a safe learning environment by serving as both a law enforcement presence and a positive role model for students and staff.
From August through May
, the SRO will work daylight hours in conjunction with the school calendar. When school is not in session, the officer will be reassigned based on departmental needs

Salary: $48,150 - $53,650 per year

Location: Various Schools in Bedford County
- Provide a visible law enforcement presence within assigned schools.
- Build relationships with students, faculty, and staff to encourage a safe, supportive environment.
- Conduct criminal investigations and address incidents occurring on school property.
- Teach educational programs on topics such as crime prevention, safety, and responsible decision‑making.
- Perform school safety surveys and recommend security improvements.
- Coordinate crime prevention programs within the school system.
- Attend community meetings, including Neighborhood Watch and Business Watch programs.
- Support other departmental assignments when school is not in session.
To be considered for the School Resource Officer position, candidates must meet the following requirements:
- Certification: Current Virginia DCJS Certified Law Enforcement Officer with at least two years of experience.
- Education: High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
- Driver’s License: Valid Virginia operator’s license with an approved driving record.
- Age: Must be at least 21 years old by the date of hire.
- Tobacco‑Free: Must abstain from tobacco use both on and off duty, in compliance with Virginia Heart and Lung Laws.
- Background: No felony convictions; misdemeanor convictions evaluated case by case.
The hiring process typically takes six to twelve weeks and includes the following stages:
- Annual Salary: $48,150 - $53,650, based on experience and qualifications.
- Work Schedule: Full‑time, daylight hours, aligned with the school calendar (August‑May).
