Position: Head Coach - 2026 Summer

Overview

The Rolling Valley Dolphins, a member of the Northern Virginia Swim League (NVSL), is seeking a dynamic and experienced Head Swim Coach for the upcoming summer season. The NVSL is the largest summer swim league in the United States, with a strong focus on community, sportsmanship, and individual swimmer development. The ideal candidate will be a highly motivated leader with a passion for coaching swimmers of all ages and abilities.

This is a seasonal, part-time position with primary responsibilities spanning from late May through the end of July.

Performance Expectations for the Head Coach
  • Foster a Positive and Inclusive Team Environment:
    Create a culture of good sportsmanship, teamwork, and fun for all swimmers, from the youngest novices to the most experienced senior swimmers. The focus should be on building a love for the sport and a sense of community.
  • Demonstrate Strong Leadership and Management:
    Supervise, train, and mentor a staff of assistant coaches and junior coaches. Delegate responsibilities effectively and ensure a cohesive and well-organized coaching staff.
  • Develop Swimmer

    Skills:

    Plan and implement daily practice schedules and seasonal training plans for swimmers of all age groups (5-18) and abilities. Provide constructive, individualized feedback on stroke mechanics, starts, and turns, and work to correct disqualifications (DQs) at meets.
  • Manage Competitive Operations:
    Prepare meet lineups for both "A" (competitive) and "B" (developmental) meets, ensuring fair and strategic placement of swimmers. Accurately manage meet entries and work with team representatives to ensure compliance with NVSL rules.
  • Ensure Safety:
    Maintain a safe and organized pool environment during practices and meets. Be knowledgeable of and adhere to all safety protocols and emergency action plans.
  • Communicate Effectively:
    Maintain open and positive communication with swimmers, parents, assistant coaches, and the team's representatives. Respond to questions and concerns in a timely and professional manner.
  • Promote Team Spirit:
    Actively participate in team activities, social events, and pep rallies to build morale and foster a strong sense of team identity.
Key Responsibilities
  • Develop, organize, and lead all team practices for the summer swim team.
  • Create and execute a season-long training plan focused on stroke development, endurance, and race strategy.
  • Supervise and manage a staff of assistant and junior coaches, providing them with guidance and training.
  • Prepare and submit meet entries and relay lineups for all NVSL "A" meets, "B" meets, Relay Carnival, and Divisional Championships.
  • Attend all team practices, meets, and official team events.
  • Communicate with team representatives on all matters related to the swim team.
  • Ensure all NVSL and USA Swimming rules and regulations are followed.
  • Provide a fun and encouraging environment for all swimmers to learn and improve.
Qualifications
  • A minimum of 2-3 years of competitive swim coaching experience; NVSL head coaching experience is highly preferred.
  • Competitive swimming experience at a high school, club, or collegiate level.
  • Demonstrated experience in working with and developing swimmers of all ages and abilities.
  • Extensive knowledge of NVSL and USA Swimming rules and procedures.
  • Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Current Lifeguard, CPR, and First Aid certifications (or ability to obtain before the start of the season).
Salary and Compensation

The salary for this position is competitive and commensurate with experience, typically ranging from $6,000 to $10,000 for the season. The exact salary will be determined based on the candidate's qualifications, experience, and the size of the team.
