The Homeless Services Division of the Prince William County Department of Social Services, in collaboration with the Prince William Area Continuum of Care (CoC), is seeking a part‑time Human Services Caseworker to help people avoid and end homelessness by increasing affordable housing options in our community.

Funding Notice

This is a grant‑funded position currently supported through June 30, 2027. Funding for FY27 represents a renewal year under the Virginia Homeless Solutions Program (VHSP). Continued employment beyond June 30, 2027, is contingent upon successful submission and approval of a new funding application for FY28.

About This Role

As a part‑time Human Services Caseworker, you will oversee the coordination of financial assistance and case‑management services for the VHSP for individuals residing at the Ferlazzo Emergency Shelter, the Hilda Barg Homeless Prevention Center, and those who are unsheltered. As an integral member of the case‑management team, you will assist participants in recognizing their housing needs and overcoming barriers to housing.

This includes assistance with locating suitable housing, completing housing applications, securing financial assistance, and facilitating the transition from homelessness to stable, permanent housing. Additionally, the Human Services Caseworker will implement strategies to support housing stability, such as ensuring timely rent payments and fostering positive community relationships, to help participants maintain their housing long term. The Human Services Caseworker will discuss the best practice of Progressive Engagement by delivering the appropriate amount of rental assistance and case‑management services based on each participant’s needs.

Minimum Requirements
  • High school diploma or G.E.D. and 5 years of experience in a human services or social services‑related field.
Preferred

Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in social work, human services, or a related field.
Preferred Experience Areas
  • Working in programs that provide rental assistance to individuals experiencing homelessness.
  • Developing and maintaining case records with unique identifiers, including assessments, case notes, housing stabilization plans, etc.
  • Identifying crisis situations and referring to appropriate professional staff.
  • Knowledge of community resources to assist people experiencing homelessness.
Special Requirements
  • Resource/foster parents for youth in the Prince William foster‑care program may not be employed by the Prince William Department of Social Services. Resource/foster parents for youth from other localities are welcome to apply.
  • All DSS staff are required to provide emergency human services work, including staffing emergency shelters in the event of a community disaster.
  • Candidates must pass criminal history, child protective services, and DMV background checks.
  • Candidates must possess a valid driver’s license and be eligible to drive for work.
Work Schedule

30 hours a week;
Monday‑Friday; 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Position is eligible to telework one day per week. Telework eligibility is subject to change as business needs warrant; there is no future guarantee of teleworking.

Hiring Salary Range

$36.37 to $50.24 per hour
