Summary
Leads and performs the skilled journey-level work required to install, modify, inspect, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain heating, ventilation, air-conditioning, refrigeration equipment, and direct digital controls (DDC) systems.
QualificationsRequired
- Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school or possession of a General Equivalency Diploma (GED) certificate.
- Three (3) years of experience in air-conditioning or HVACR, two (2) years of which shall have been at the journey level.
- Possession of a valid EPA-approved universal refrigerant recovery certification to include types I, II, and III.
- Possession of an appropriate, valid motor vehicle operator's license with a good driving record.
- May be required to work an evening and/or night shift on a regular or rotating basis, accept call-back overtime or regular overtime, and/or agree to assume an emergency call-out list status.
- Knowledge of the methods and skills used in the repair of electrical and mechanical components, DDC, boilers, hot water/steam piping, and functioning of air-conditioning units, systems, equipment, and application-specific and basic computer programs.
- Knowledge of common hazards and necessary safety precautions.
- Knowledge of local, state, and national codes.
- Ability to read and interpret instructions, diagrams, sketches, blueprints, and manufacturers' manuals.
- Capability to estimate time and material needs, determine when the repair is not economically practical, and perform routine tasks and arithmetic computations.
Preferred
- Completion of an acceptable apprentice-level HVAC training program.
- Manages and oversees the overall maintenance activities of all school and center facilities management.
- Leads and performs skilled journey-level work to maintain and repair a wide variety of domestic and commercial type air-conditioning equipment, refrigeration equipment, and DDC systems such as window units, single-zone and multi-zone rooftop units, and central units.
- Maintains and repairs heat pump and solar equipment and systems.
- Maintains walk-in freezers, refrigerators, reach-in refrigerators/freezers, milk coolers, refrigerated cases, and related refrigeration equipment.
- Basic troubleshooting of DDC systems.
- Maintains and repairs complex boiler/burners, hot water/steam piping systems, controls, pumps, motors, and other related heating equipment.
- Understands and applies knowledge of local, state, and national mechanical and pressure vessel codes, locates causes of failure or malfunction by observation and testing of mechanical, electrical, pneumatic components and application-specific computer programs.
- Cleans, repairs, replaces, and/or adjusts interlocking motor starters, protectors, and pneumatic electric controls including step controllers, master and sub-master controllers, thermostats, solenoids, relays, valves, switches, dashpots, fuses, and other safety devices.
- Repairs or replaces other functional components of the units or systems as necessary, such as compressors, condensers, evaporators, motors, and fans.
- Carries out designated procedures for seasonal start-ups and shutdowns, such as checking, repairing, and calibrating controls, leak testing, lubricating, changing oil and filters, tightening electrical connections, and cleaning cooling towers and condensers.
- Performs work on-site or in a shop.
- Drives a vehicle to and from locations and keeps the vehicle supplied with tools and materials.
- Performs operator maintenance on the vehicle and keeps it in orderly condition.
- Keeps records and makes reports of work accomplished and materials used.
- Performs other related duties as required or assigned.
This job requires strength, agility, dexterity, and visual acuity to perform all tasks. While performing the duties of this job, the employee must adhere to all site safety regulations and may be required to regularly stand, sit, walk, bend, climb ladders, and/or kneel. There may be exposure to extreme heat and cold, outdoor environments, heavy equipment, moving machinery, fumes, toxic or caustic chemicals, and loud noises.
This job requires lifting up to 25 lbs., periodically lifting/moving up to 50 lbs., and occasional lifting/moving up to 100 lbs. alone or with assistance.
