Travels from site to site to service and repair refrigeration, HVAC, and other miscellaneous equipment in retail supermarkets. Most work is performed without direct supervision or assistance.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Respond to service requests to repair supermarket refrigeration systems, HVAC, cardboard balers, checkout counters, lighting, humidifiers, and other miscellaneous equipment.
- Complete service reports, time sheets, expense reports, purchase records, etc. to document activities.
- Maintain contact with Sun Excerpt dispatch via telephone and voice mail to receive new service calls.
- Perform periodic preventive maintenance inspections and procedures; maintain the workplace (including the service van) in a neat, clean, and safe condition.
- Communicate with the Service Supervisor to advise on the need for further action when appropriate.
- Interview store personnel to determine the need for service; instruct store personnel in proper operational techniques for safe, effective, and efficient operation of their equipment.
- Train new Service Techs.
- Work and drive safely, using appropriate safety gear and techniques.
- Respond to emergency breakdown calls whenever possible.
- Project a professional image to associates, customers, and others; observe all rules of food safety and hygiene.
- Perform other duties as directed by Supervision, and as required for the execution of the other responsibilities.
- Good judgment, reliability, initiative, tact, integrity, dependability, and quick thinking.
- Computer literate.
- Knowledge of MSDS and OSHA; EPA certified (Type I and II) in proper refrigeration practices.
- Capable of working on roofs, scaffolds, and ladders at medium heights (approximately 30').
- Good verbal, writing, and reading skills, including the ability to read, interpret, and apply manufacturers’ instructions, and communicate with store personnel.
- Valid driver's license with good driving record; must be insurable.
- Ability to prioritize multiple demands, and to adjust priorities as conditions dictate.
- Knowledge of refrigeration systems and service techniques, including troubleshooting, electrical, and brazing skills.
- Proper use of hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic instruments common to the trade.
- Proper food safety techniques for the supermarket industry.
- Directs the activities of trainees when applicable.
- Post‑secondary technical training in a job‑related discipline.
- Five years of experience in maintenance of commercial refrigeration systems.
- Sensory ability to perform responsibilities.
- Ability to lift up to 100 pounds occasionally.
- Ability to work under extremes of weather, and under conditions of heat, cold, noise, and dust to the extent they are found in the typical supermarket.
- Ability to work under pressure of time, without direct supervision, and outside of normal working hours (for occasional emergencies).
- Work environments include service truck, supermarket sales area, refrigeration equipment room, and rooftop.
- Substantial amounts of standing, bending, lifting, climbing, and reaching.
- Exposure to fumes from refrigerant leaks, solvents, oils, and brazing.
- Some work in confined spaces.
- Exposure to temperature extremes, noise, and dust.
The hourly pay for this position starts at $30.00/hr. and is up to $44.00/hr.
