Job Title: Residential Maintenance Technician Helper
Classification: Non-exempt
Reports To: Sr. Director of Physical Plant
Job Summary/Objective: Sweet Briar seeks a person capable of independently performing maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and/or preventive maintenance specific to our own campus housing units. This person will support the Residential Maintenance Technician by working jointly as well as independently on prioritized tasks.
Position Type/Expected
Work Hours:
Full Time, Monday through Friday 7:00 am to 3:30 pm;
On-Call work and some weekend work will be required.
Supervisory Responsibilities: None
Essential Responsibilities:
- Rough and finish carpentry including cabinet work, and sheetrock.
- Install and Repair wood, metal, and vinyl doors/windows.
- Install, replace or repair locks.
- Patching and painting.
- Ability to problem solve.
- Change out faucets, commodes and handle minor plumbing issues.
- Changing HVAC filters.
- Minor electric work including ceiling fan installation, receptacle replacement, and troubleshooting.
- Fabricates/repairs wood and or concrete.
- Assist Contractors in locating and gaining access to facilities.
- Repairs all types of roofs, roof drains and flashing, cleans and repairs gutters.
- Assists other departments with inclement weather clean up.
- Creates and maintains a safe, clean, and well-organized work environment including your work vehicle.
- Assures the safe and proper use of tools and equipment.
- Assist in preparation of graduation and other college functions as directed by supervisor.
- Responds to On-Call emergencies by assuring prompt resolution to problems.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
- Must be able to read blueprints and drawings and possess specific knowledge of building construction and maintenance of facilities.
- Ability to use a variety of hand and power tools and other equipment such as forklift, drills, saws.
- Must have basic mathematical skills plus good oral and written communication skills.
- Must have a valid VA driver license or ability to get one and be approved by our insurance company to drive our vehicles.
- Must have a high school diploma or GED completion.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in an educational and or residential setting.
Work Environment:
- Fast-paced and often changing.
- Ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without supervision.
- Both indoor and outdoor environments in varying types of weather.
Physical Demands: Ability to walk a large, rural campus, lift 80 lbs., and work from a ladder.
Travel: Occasional town trips to pick up needed supplies.
