Position: Jet Bridge Technician I ($7,500 Sign-on-Bonus)

Jet Bridge Technician I

Serves in a Heavy Equipment Maintenance Shop in the Airport Maintenance Department at Washington Dulles International Airport.

Troubleshoots, repairs, overhauls, and performs preventive maintenance on critical airport assets such as Passenger Boarding Bridges (Jet Bridges), 400 Hz Aircraft Ground Power Units (GPUs), Aircraft Pre‑Conditioned Air Units (PCAIRs), and related Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems. Also assists with maintenance and repair of HVAC, mechanical, electrical and electronic components of various types of mobile equipment and auxiliary generators including Mobile Lounges, Plane‑Mates, Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) Apparatus, and Variable Message Boards/Signs (VMS).

Maintains all critical airport transportation systems. Performs related functions.

This is a developmental level position and may lead to the full Journey‑level Jet Bridge Technician II position.

Incumbent has 24 months to train and demonstrate successful performance to achieve the Journey level skills in the HVAC, Electrical and Mechanical skill sets. Incumbent is encouraged to pursue Master Electrician and Master HVAC licenses. The incumbent will also be required, at a minimum, to attend PBB manufacturer provided training in the following areas:

  • Jet Bridge Mechanical – Roller Adjustments:
    Three (3) Days
  • Jet Bridge Mechanical – Lift Column / Rack Settings:
    Two (2) Days
  • Jet Bridge – Electronics – Limits and Settings:
    Three (3) Days
  • Jet Bridge Controls and Drive Systems – DC Drive / AC Drive / Inverters:
    Two (2) days
  • Ground Power Units – theory of operation, troubleshooting and repairs – 120/140/180:
    One (1) Day
  • PCAIR – theory of operation, troubleshooting and repairs 45/50/100:
    Two (2) Days
  • General Periodic Maintenance:
    Two (2) days

After 24 months and upon obtaining Journey/Master level skill and knowledge, PBB manufacturer provided training and EPA Refrigerant certification, a one‑grade increase is awarded non‑competitively and the incumbent moves to the Jet Bridge Technician II (TJBT
702) position.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Performs a variety of duties to maintain, troubleshoot and repair Jet Bridges, GPUs, and PCAIR assets.

Uses drawings, schematics and technical manuals to maintain and repair the mechanical components of Jet Bridges, PCAIR and GPU assets to include hydraulic systems, mechanical roller and guide systems and steering systems/components.

Uses electrical drawings, schematics, and wiring diagrams to trace and troubleshoot faulty circuits, wiring, and to determine defective electrical components including breakers, capacitors, transistors, relays, diodes, and circuit boards. Uses test equipment including digital volt ohm meters (DVOMs), amp probes, digital storage oscilloscopes (DSOs), reactive and resistive load banks.

Maintains, repairs, disassembles, adjusts, and reconditions heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems and components such as compressors, condensers, pumps, receivers, evaporators, and thermostatic coils. In addition to common hand tools, uses manifold pressure gauges to determine proper operation and refrigerant levels. Uses soldering and brazing techniques to repair and install copper tubing and air‑conditioning repairs in accordance with Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations on refrigerant handling and recovery.

Uses operations and maintenance manuals, on‑line information systems, and parts catalogs to identify original equipment components and assist in the identification of substitutions, if required.

Performs mechanical repairs and adjustments as may be required in the performance of duties or as assigned.

Responds to trouble calls to take immediate corrective action on malfunctioning equipment and vehicles including equipment carrying passengers or equipment that is actively servicing aircraft.
