Summary

Performs skilled journey-level mechanical work required to maintain, install, troubleshoot, and repair a wide variety of motors, industrial arts equipment, machines, and major appliances.

Qualifications Required
  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school or possession of a General Equivalency Diploma (GED) certificate.
  • One (1) year of experience in the repair and maintenance of electric motors, equipment, machines, or appliances at the apprentice II or equivalent level.
  • Possession of an appropriate, valid motor vehicle operator's license with a good driving record.
  • May be required to work an evening and/or night shift on a regular or rotating basis, accept call‑back overtime or regular overtime, and/or agree to assume an emergency call‑out list status.
  • Knowledge of the methods, materials, equipment, and tools appropriate for equipment repair‑related installation, maintenance, and repair activities.
  • Knowledge of common hazards and necessary safety precautions.
  • Knowledge of local, state, and national codes.
  • Knowledge of basic computer skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret instructions, diagrams, sketches, blueprints, and manufacturers' manuals.
  • Capability to estimate time and material needs, determine when the repair is not economically practical, and perform routine tasks and arithmetic computations.
Preferred
  • Completion of an acceptable apprentice‑level training program.
Major Duties/Essential Functions
  • Disassembles damaged or worn motors in the shop.
  • Performs repair and rebuild operations such as rewiring and replacing armatures, bearings, bushings, brushes, and centrifugal or on‑off switches.
  • Supervises and/or performs the maintenance and repair of a variety of electrical appliances, tools, and other equipment as assigned.
  • Repairs motors on location when necessary.
  • Maintains and repairs a variety of industrial arts machines and equipment in use at schools for instructional purposes.
  • Replaces motors, bearings, shafts, switches, pulleys, belts, gears, seals, guards, and other parts and components on equipment and machines such as power saws, joiners, planers, drill presses, sanders, grinders, lathes, welding equipment, air tools, hydraulic lifts, and jacks.
  • Maintains and repairs a variety of major appliances and related equipment in school kitchens and home economics and athletic departments such as ovens, food mixers, salad cutters, food carriers, compactors, electric ranges, dish‑washers, scales, and commercial clothes washing machines and dryers.
  • Replaces motors, bearings, seals, gaskets, gearboxes, heating elements, switches, wiring, thermostats, controls, and various other parts and components as necessary.
  • Diagnoses defects and makes minor or major repairs.
  • Drives a vehicle to and from locations and keeps the vehicle supplied with tools and materials.
  • Performs operator maintenance on the vehicle and keeps it in orderly condition.
  • Keeps records and makes reports of work accomplished and materials used.
  • Performs other related duties as required or assigned.
Work Environment/Physical Requirements

This job requires strength, agility, dexterity, and visual acuity to perform all tasks. While performing the duties of this job, the employee must adhere to all site safety regulations and may be required to regularly stand, sit, walk, bend, climb ladders, and/or kneel. There may be exposure to extreme heat and cold, outdoor environments, heavy equipment, moving machinery, fumes, toxic or caustic chemicals, and loud noises.

This job requires lifting up to 25 lbs., periodically lifting/moving up to 50 lbs., and occasional lifting/moving up to 100 lbs. alone or with assistance.
