Job Duties
  • Patrols within statutory jurisdiction; properties, buildings, and parking lots by foot, vehicle, or as assigned to establish a visible presence to deter criminal activity and detect incidents compromising safety and security.
  • Responds to calls for service in a timely manner.
  • Assist Local Law Enforcement with investigations of vehicle crashes on state‑owned property, consistent with Department policies.
  • Analyze and solve problems including gathering information, anticipating problems, weighing consequences, and making sound decisions.
  • Provide crime prevention services to facility through frequent patrols and safety presentations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned, ensuring facilities and occupants are secure and safe by following Hospital and Departmental Policy and Procedure.
  • Takes appropriate observation and notification actions to support law enforcement authorities in prevention and investigation consistent with Department policies and Virginia State Code.
  • Perform facility fire drills to maintain compliance with State Fire Marshal and Joint Commission regulations.
  • Perform patrols to check doors and windows of buildings on campus.
  • Dispatch: receive emergency and non‑emergency calls, determine nature, location, priority, and dispatch the appropriate public safety officer, using a dispatched system.
  • Maintain an up‑to‑date 24‑hour report detailing date, officers on duty, assignments, and shift activities.
  • Inspect patrol vehicles at shift start for damages and document findings on 24‑hour report.
  • Respond professionally to incidents, issue keys with proper paperwork, maintain a professional demeanor when interacting, and ensure documentation is completed accurately.
  • Answer hospital phone line when assigned, remain professional when speaking and transferring calls.
  • Use computer skills to log and type reports for the department.
  • Respond to criminal investigations following established procedures.
  • Investigate suspected criminal activity and report to law enforcement authorities.
  • File required reports and forms within deadlines, ensuring accuracy.
  • Effectively express ideas orally or in writing, testify in court when needed, and type and send reports.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Valid Virginia Driver’s License.
  • Ability to become certified as a DCJS unarmed Security Officer.
  • Previous Security, Law Enforcement, Correctional, or Military experience.
  • Previous experience working in Mental Health.
