As a member of the Public Safety and Security Division, the Crime Prevention Advisor is responsible for providing advice and support to Nova Scotians who are experiencing cyberbullying or the sharing of intimate images without consent. The Crime Prevention Advisor is responsible to respond to complaints made under the Intimate Images and Cyber Protection Act and use dispute resolution techniques to facilitate mediation between parties involved in such behaviour with the objective of either reaching an informal resolution and cessation of the harassment, or providing navigational services to help victims seek recourse through the Court with the application of a Cyber Protection Order.

The Crime Prevention Advisor is also responsible to provide consultative and advisory services on matters relating to crime prevention initiatives, arrange and facilitate training to schools, law enforcement agencies, and community organizations. The Crime Prevention Advisor may also represent PSSD as a liaison on interdepartmental committees.

This position reports to the Manager of Crime Prevention.

Primary Accountabilities

Your main responsibilities will be:

  • Provide trauma-informed responses to complaints of Cyberbullying and the non-consensual sharing of intimate images.
  • Provide resources and assistance to the public related to navigating the Intimate Images and Cyber Protection Act processes and other available victim centered resources.
  • Community engagement activities associated with enhancing awareness of the Intimate Images and Cyber Protection Act. This includes formal presentations and meetings with community organizations, schools, and police agencies.
  • Provides advice and analysis related to emerging trends, technological advancements, legislative landscapes, or any other topic which impacts, or is likely to impact, public safety.
  • Collating sensitive confidential information as directed by complainant from various websites, databases, etc. Verifying complaints by conducting analysis of the information and by researching online social media accounts to determine if the case falls within scope of the legislation.
  • Maintaining detailed confidential records including handling confidential documents and other information from police agencies and/or legal counsel. Compiles and completes detailed confidential notes for unit records including handling confidential documents.
  • Participating in restorative approaches to conflict resolution as mandated by the Intimate Images and Cyber Protection Act.
Qualifications and Experience

As the successful candidate, you have a bachelors’ degree in a relevant field (e.g. Criminology; Social Work; Psychology; Law/Justice Studies) and 5 years of related experience. An equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered.

You will require motivation and an ability to problem-solve while making decisions in consultation with your manager. Your sound judgement and application of common sense, with the proven ability to offer creative and innovative solutions to sensitive problems, is required. Strong analytical, interpersonal and communication skills are essential.
