This position is for a research support technician who will assist in several research projects at the Savannah River Site. Projects include working with graduate students to understand how aquatic ferns sequester metals in a constructed wetland, develop methods for stream bioassessments of aquatic macroinvertebrates, and study how mycorrhizal fungi and bacteria influence nitrogen in agricultural systems.
Duties / Responsibilities- Laboratory work: preparing sampling kits, microscopy, DNA extractions, sorting plant samples, weighing samples, freeze‑drying, and cleaning lab supplies. (50%)
- Field work: collecting water and plant samples from a constructed wetland designed for metals removal, conducting stream measurements, and documenting bioassessment methods based on macroinvertebrate sampling. (20%)
- Data entry & organization: preparing spreadsheets, data entry, image analysis, and basic statistical analysis. (15%)
- Lab management: supply inventory, ordering and organizing supplies, adherence to safety protocols, and basic equipment maintenance. (15%)
Field work in hot, humid conditions with piercing insects in summer, cold temperatures in winter, wading into streams and wetlands, carrying equipment up to a mile, lifting heavy objects (>50 lbs), prolonged microscope use, and repetitive pipetting motions.
