Reporting to the Manager of Research and Analysis, you will work with a multidisciplinary team that provides analytical, business, evaluation, and research insights to inform decision‑making, policy development, and strategic planning. This position plays a key role in expanding the Department’s capabilities to drive insights by incorporating a broader use of varied data resources.

Primary Accountabilities

As a Research and Statistical Officer, you will be responsible for research, evaluation, and statistical analysis in the area criminal justice. You will design, execute, and report results of research using both qualitative and quantitative research methods, analyze and interpret complex data, and provide strategic advice and recommendations based on analyses to support policy decisions, program development, and implementation.

  • Act as a subject matter expert in the area of program and policy evaluations, including evaluation frameworks, data collection tools, and outcome assessments;
  • Play a key role in research related to criminal justice;
  • Contribute to major initiatives by compiling and leveraging structured and unstructured data from a variety of sources for analytical insights;
  • Prepare briefing materials, including data visualization techniques to present results of statistical analyses, research summaries, and recommendations;
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders and working groups as required.
Qualifications and Experience

A completed master’s degree in a related discipline such as Criminology/Social Sciences or Law, with 5 years of related experience; or a completed bachelor’s degree in a related discipline such as Criminology/Social Sciences or Law, with 7 years of related experience. An equivalent level of education and related experience may be considered.

As a successful Research and Statistical Officer 4, you:

  • Have experience leading assessments of program implementation and results;
  • Have an understanding of the Nova Scotia criminal justice system, including relevant legislation, policy and programs;
  • Have demonstrated skills in research and planning, are familiar with computerized information systems and research databases, and are able to analyze and interpret large volumes of complex data;
  • Possess excellent verbal and written communication skills, strong interpersonal and leadership skills; sound judgement, interpersonal skills, and adapting information to staff at different levels is essential;
  • Have exceptional problem‑solving skills, enjoy working in an innovative environment, and require minimal supervision.

The following experiences are considered assets:

  • Experience using Tableau;
  • Experience using statistical programming languages (e.g., Python or R);
  • Project management experience.
