Summary
Provides substitute custodial support and/or substitute oversight to custodial staff in Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS)-owned buildings.
Qualifications Required- Any combination of education and experience equivalent to completion of the tenth grade.
- Some experience in public building custodial work.
- Must successfully complete the FCPS Custodial Certification Course prior to or within one year of appointment.
- Possession of an appropriate, valid motor vehicle operator license with a good driving record.
- May be required to work an evening and/or night shift on a regular or rotating basis, accept call-back overtime or regular overtime, and/or agree to assume an emergency call-out list status.
- Knowledge of custodial methods, equipment, procedures, and cleaning materials.
- Knowledge of the operation of a variety of models of heating and air-conditioning system.
- Knowledge of geographic locations of buildings in the county.
- Ability to lead and oversee the work of a small group of custodial staff.
- Ability to understand written and verbal instructions.
- Ability to learn the appropriate use of cleaning products.
- Ability to recognize and report hazards and apply safe work methods.
- Ability to work cooperatively with employees, students, and the public.
- Ability to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing.
- Serves as a substitute custodian performing repetitive, heavy, manual work requiring efficient performance of simple building cleaning and maintenance duties and/or oversees the work of a group of custodians by making routine inspections of work in progress or completed work.
- Assists with the cleaning of buildings, the preparation of rooms for meetings, and minor building repair assignments.
- Operates and adjusts heating and air-conditioning equipment in numerous buildings.
- Transports and empties large trash and recycling containers into outdoor units.
- Moves and transports furniture, equipment, boxed textbooks, and other supplies, manually or with mechanical assistance.
- Operates snow and ice removal and equipment.
- May perform or lead building operational crews in performing, specialized duties such as window washing, removing snow and ice, mowing lawns, maintaining shrubbery, picking up paper and debris, removing and emptying containers of standing water, and preparing floors.
- Observes and reports needs for maintenance services and/or supplies.
- Performs related duties as required or assigned.
Physical Requirements
This job requires strength, agility, dexterity, and visual acuity to perform all tasks. While performing the duties of this job, the employee must adhere to all site safety regulations and may be required to regularly stand, sit, walk, bend, climb ladders, and/or kneel. There may be exposure to extreme heat and cold, outdoor environments, heavy equipment, moving machinery, fumes, toxic or caustic chemicals, and loud noises.
This job requires lifting up to 25 lbs., periodically lifting/moving up to 50 lbs., and occasional lifting/moving up to 100 lbs. alone or with assistance.
