Emergency Medical Technician - EMT

Position and Responsibilities

Position Overview: The primary objective of EMS is to provide safe and compassionate ambulance and medical transportation, while preserving patients’ dignity and ensuring community safety.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Attend instruction sessions for orientation, EMS operations, compliance, emergency vehicle operations; maintain EMS certification and other required programs.
  • Provide out-of-hospital care to patients and safe ambulance transport in accordance with statewide protocols and medical command direction.
  • Lift, carry, and balance a minimum of 12 pounds (12 lbs) or more with assistance, up to 250 lbs; operate at heights up to 33 inches for distances of up to 10 feet.
  • Hear and respond to spoken information from co-workers, patients, physicians, dispatchers, and sounds at the emergency scene.
  • Communicate verbally in person, by telephone and telecommunications using English; meet minimum vision requirements to operate a motor vehicle in each represented state.
  • Read and comprehend written materials under stress; document patient information via written or electronic means in an approved state OEMS record system.
  • Demonstrate manual dexterity and fine motor skills; bend, stoop, crawl and walk on uneven surfaces.
  • Inspect EMS equipment to ensure adequate supplies; verify proper operation, refuel and fluid checks of assigned ambulance; report needed maintenance.
  • Respond to callbacks or call-ins; assist other emergency personnel as required and complete tasks as assigned by supervisors.
  • Maintain professional appearance and decorum; perform general maintenance and cleaning of stations, training facilities and ambulances; work as a self-starter and be adaptable to change within a team-based structure.
  • Perform event stand-by operations at sporting events, community festivals and other events with significant attendee numbers.
  • Respond to hazardous material incidents at the first-responder level and participate in emergency operations during natural disasters and catastrophic events.
  • Understand stress response and personal well-being; have knowledge of body substance isolation and patients’ rights under HIPAA.
  • Interact professionally with outside agencies and personnel including medical facility staff, law enforcement, fire/rescue, and communication personnel.
Requirements
  • General knowledge of EMS operations, ambulance operations and proper use of EMS equipment.
  • Ability to learn through training using various EMS methods.
  • Ability to learn road/street systems and layout of assigned communities.
  • Obtain necessary skills including airway management, ventilation, CPR, and certification-level medications and defibrillator use; provide trauma care including hemorrhage control and immobilization as appropriate.
Working Environment/Conditions

EMS operations occur 24 hours a day, 365 days a year in all weather conditions. Ambulances and EMS personnel must be prepared to respond at a moment’s notice and maintain viable field operations until the situation is resolved or personnel are relieved.

EMS personnel operate in an uncontrolled public arena. The role requires mental, physical and emotional preparedness to handle a wide variety of patient types and situations. Safety, professionalism and compassion are essential traits for success.
