Overview
The Peer Recovery Specialist will be designated to the Recovery Court participants. This peer will act as a level of support and advocacy for the participants with substance use disorders.
Responsibilities- Provide peer support and advocacy services for consumers of substance use disorders and their families and other caregivers.
- Perform work of moderate difficulty in providing peer support and advocacy services as described.
- Work involves risk to personal safety due to close contact with the offender population in a community corrections setting and may be exposed to unsafe or unsanitary environments; work is often performed independently.
- Engage in related duties as required and cooperate with internal and external customers.
- Demonstrate effective communication and reporting in both oral and written forms; operate a personal computer and related software and standard office equipment.
- Meet training requirements:
Successful completion of 72 hours in each of the four DBHDS CPRS training domains — Advocacy, Ethical Responsibility, Mentoring and Education, and Recovery/Wellness Support.
- High school diploma or GED; bachelor’s degree or training as a peer advocate preferred; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
- One year of experience in providing peer recovery support services or in a related behavioral health field, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
- Must have personal experience with a serious substance use disorder and own recovery.
- Possession of an appropriate driver’s license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
- Certification as a Peer Recovery Specialist by the Virginia Certification Board (VCB).
- May be required to work a flexible or on-call schedule.
