Position OverviewThe primary objective of EMS staff is to deliver safe, compassionate medical transportation while safeguarding patient dignity and community safety. EMS personnel provide non‑emergency patient transfers, standby support for community events, and respond to emergency calls to deliver immediate care and transport critically ill and injured individuals within the scope of their training and authority.
Essential Job Functions- Attend orientation, EMS operations, compliance, emergency vehicle operations, and maintain EMS certification and other required programs.
- Provide out‑of‑hospital care to patients and safe ambulance transport in accordance with statewide protocols and medical command direction.
- Lift, carry, and balance a minimum of 12 lbs alone and 250 lbs with assistance, at a height of 33 inches, for a distance of 10 feet.
- Hear, comprehend, and respond to spoken information from co‑workers, patients, physicians, dispatchers, and other sources heard in the emergency environment.
- Verbally communicate in person, via telephone, and electronic communications in English; meet vision requirements for operating a motor vehicle.
- Read and comprehend written materials under stressful conditions; document patient information using an approved state EMS record system.
- Demonstrate manual dexterity and fine‑motor skills necessary for providing quality patient care, including bending, stooping, crawling, and walking on uneven terrain.
- Inspect EMS equipment to ensure supplies are adequate, verify proper operation, refuel, perform fluid checks, and report needed maintenance for the assigned ambulance.
- Respond to call‑in or emergency situations and assist other emergency personnel as needed.
- Maintain professional appearance, perform general maintenance and cleaning of stations, training facilities, and ambulances, be self‑starter and adaptable to team‑based management structures.
- Perform event stand‑by operations at sporting events, community festivals, and other large gatherings.
- Respond to hazardous material incidents at the first‑responder level, participate in natural disasters and catastrophic events.
- Apply basic knowledge of stress response and personal well‑being practices; understand body‑substance isolation and patients’ privacy rights under HIPAA.
- Interact professionally with outside agencies such as medical facility staff, social workers, law enforcement, fire/rescue, and communication personnel.
- General knowledge of EMS operations, ambulance operation, and proper use of EMS equipment.
- Ability to learn through diverse training methods and acquire knowledge of local road and community layout.
- Acquire and maintain skills such as airway management, ventilating patients, administering CPR, and using medication and defibrillator devices appropriate to certification level.
- Provide trauma care, including hemorrhage control, shock treatment, wound bandaging, and immobilization of injured extremities or the spine.
- EMS operations are 24/7, 365 days a year in all weather conditions; ambulances and staff must be prepared to respond at short notice.
- EMS personnel work in uncontrolled public environments and must handle a variety of patient types, requiring mental, physical, and emotional preparedness.
