Cardiac Monitoring Technician – UVA Health
Responsible for physiologic monitoring of patient status via electronic systems and for notifying the appropriate patient care team members in the event of a variance and/or audible alarm, according to departmental policy. Patient data is documented in a timely manner according to departmental standards.
Responsibilities- Monitor patient physiologic status using electronic systems.
- Maintain manned monitor stations to ensure safe provision of patient care.
- Perform monitoring in accordance with departmental policy.
- Confirm proper functioning of equipment per departmental policy and procedure.
- Recognize equipment malfunctions and communicate immediately to the supervisor/appropriate staff.
- Maintain workstation to ensure continuity of workflow and patient care; monitoring includes cardiac rhythm interpretation, end-tidal CO2, and SpO
2. - Check and document alarm settings every two hours as per departmental policy.
- Check and document physiologic monitoring orders every two hours; record data points (cardiac rhythm, heart rate, SpO2, CO2) every two hours as per department standard.
- Identify variances and initiate follow-up actions.
- Recognize abnormal clinical signs, variances and alarms immediately per established departmental criteria; notify appropriate patient care team members per policy; initiate follow-up assessment and activities as required.
- Document patient data in a timely manner according to departmental standards; ensure accuracy and thoroughness.
- Utilize the Electronic Medical Record (EPIC) to review patient orders, location, and throughput.
- Communicate effectively with patients and staff using professional interpersonal skills.
- Maintain privacy of patient and employee information at all times.
- Contribute to a positive, professional work environment and uphold UVA’s mission and values.
- Participate in performance improvement activities and team-based problem solving.
- Time off is scheduled to avoid disrupting workflow; support colleagues to solve problems and maintain productive work dynamics.
- Other duties may be assigned as needed.
Education: High School Graduate or Equivalent required.
Experience: No experience required.
Liciensure: ECG Certification required within 12 months of hire date by the American Board of Cardiovascular Medicine or National Telemetry Association.
PHYSICAL DEMANDSJob requires sitting for prolonged periods, frequent bending/stooping, reaching (overhead, extensive, repetitive). Proficient communicative, auditory and visual skills; attention to detail and ability to write legibly; may be exposed to fumes, chemicals, and cold.
