Job Description- Researches, plans, designs and develops mechanical products and systems such as instruments, controls, robots, engines, machines and mechanical, thermal hydraulic or heat transfer systems for production, transmission, measurement, and use of energy.
- Applies research to the planning, design, development, and testing of mechanical and/or electromechanical systems, instruments, controls, engines, and/or machines.
The positions serves as the Mechanical System Engineer for the Utilities Engineering group. It requires a subject matter expert (SME) providing technical oversight for various mechanical utility distribution systems and plants. The Mechanical System Engineer is required to develop a cohesive working relationship with utility system operators and maintenance personnel. The candidate should have extensive knowledge of piping principles, centrifugal pumps and water distribution systems.
- The candidate’s day-to-day responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues within assigned utility system(s)
- Provide engineering resolutions for system problems/configuration changes
- Produce and/or oversee the development of technical documentation that govern the system design, configuration, and operation.
- Develop a long range strategic plan for improvements to assigned utility system(s)
- Participate in the development of planned maintenance requirements
- Support resolution of unplanned events
- Develop and maintain critical system metrics
- Participate in project design and implementation process for system related projects
- Oversee project/system testing to ensure system meets technical requirements and operates at peak performance
- 5 Years with Bachelors in Science; 3 Years with Masters; 0 Years with PhD.
- Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor’s Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.
- Mechanical Engineering degree with a Professional Engineering (PE) license, or Engineer-in-Training (EIT) working towards PE registration, is preferred. Knowledge of ASME codes and experience with heavy industrial mechanical systems is preferred.
- Shipyard/Nuclear facilities experience is desirable.
- Knowledge of NFPA codes and standards is preferred.
