U.S. Facilities, Inc., a consolidated facility and infrastructure management services firm, is seeking a qualified individual to join our team as a Marine/Maritime Designated Duty Engineer 3000HP for the Jamestown Scotland Ferry. The role involves operating and monitoring main engine and auxiliary machinery on ferry vessels to ensure the safety of passengers, crew, and property. This is a full-time position based either on the Jamestown or Surry side of the river, with responsibilities including:

  • Vessel Machinery Management: Perform minor repairs and keep the Captain informed of deficiencies.
  • Operations: Operate machinery according to USCG and VDOT regulations, policies, and recognized engineering practices.
  • Drills and Training: Conduct drills, crew training, and maintain vessel readiness for USCG inspections.
  • Record Keeping: Maintain accurate fuel readings, engineering logs, machinery usage records, and reports.
  • Security and Emergency Response: Monitor for security violations, respond to emergencies, and ensure engine room security.
  • Passenger Management: Provide assistance and resolve passenger issues professionally.
  • Emergency Operations: Work outside normal hours during emergencies, as VDOT is an emergency response agency.
  • Additional Duties: Perform other tasks as assigned by supervisors or project managers.
  • Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of relevant experience.
  • Transportation Workers Identification Credential (TWIC).
  • First Aid and CPR certifications.
  • Limited Chief or Chief Unlimited license.
  • Experience and Skills:

  • Ability to operate and monitor main engines and auxiliary machinery on ferry vessels.
  • Experience with vessels of at least 200 feet / 800 tons.
  • Knowledge of US Coast Guard regulations for ferry operations.
  • Ability to train others and diagnose/repair systems.
  • Proficiency in reading gauges, schematics, and manuals; recordkeeping skills.
  • Must hold a MMC-endorsed “Designated Duty Engineer” license for vessels of at least 3000 H.P.
  • Effective communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Skillful use of hand and power tools.
  • Work Conditions:

  • Potential for short-notice or emergency work assignments.
  • Routine performance evaluations.
  • Pre-employment Requirements:

  • Criminal History Records Check (fingerprint-based).
  • Pre-employment drug screening.
  • Minimum age of 18 years.
  • Virginia Driver’s License in good standing.
  • Compensation:

  • $45.67 - $50.00 per hour.
  • Vacation, Sick Time, Paid Holidays.
  • Note: This position is essential during emergencies, including weather events, disasters, and other emergency operations, as determined by VDOT/Project Management. Valid driver’s license, DMV records check, pre-employment drug screen, and fingerprint-based CHRC are required.
