Overview

Mid-level Marine Engineer with practical shipboard experience and a working knowledge of T-AO 187 Class vessels’ systems and operational characteristics. The engineer will support the T-AO Class Outyear Engineering Requirements Assessment (OERA) as part of a multidisciplinary team of ship Marine/Mechanical/Electrical/Structural engineers and Naval Architects, primarily in support of the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) and Military Sealift Command (MSC). Responsibilities include reviewing technical manuals, operational procedures, and key system specifications;

conducting analyses; evaluating proposed modifications; and developing technical documentation such as operational manuals and specifications that incorporate practical shipboard experience to support vessel performance and reliability.

Responsibilities
  • Provide systems engineering support for in-service and new vessel design, primarily the T-AO 187 Class.
  • Support shipboard engineering systems and work closely with stakeholders.
  • Use, maintain, and improve document authoring and drafting practices and tools to develop reports, manuals, and drawings with high efficiency and accuracy.
  • Assist the team to conduct Outyear Engineering Requirements for various classes of ships including the T-AO 187 Class‑Double Hull.
  • Design and develop fluid systems using design software such as PipeFLO and spreadsheet calculations.
  • Design and develop interfaces between ship systems and new equipment.
  • Author and develop design reports to accompany in-service modifications to ship systems.
  • Develop advanced proficiency in 2D drafting practices to improve in-service modifications.
Qualifications for the Role
  • BSME in Marine Engineering.
  • Minimum of 4 years of hands‑on experience working with ship machinery and systems, ideally on the T-AO 187 Class vessels.
  • Ability to write concise reports and specifications in English with minimal oversight in MS Word, making use of features such as styles, fields, and references.
  • Proven track record in ship design, modification, or maintenance projects.
  • Proficiency in MS Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to work independently on individual projects with minimal supervision and collaboratively with other engineering disciplines on a team.
  • Ability to interface with team members, technical leads, and Project Managers.
  • Ability to review and apply US Navy and/or US commercial ship design requirements, including DOD acquisition, system safety, and testing processes.
  • Strong verbal (English) communication skills.
  • Willingness to travel up to 10% of the time.
  • Must be a US Citizen.
  • Ability to obtain a clearance.
Nice‑to‑Have Qualifications
  • Active USCG Coast Guard license 3AE Unlimited Horsepower or Greater.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD 2D.
  • Shipboard and/or shipyard design, operation, or repair experience.
  • Engineering and Technical Authority (E&TA) familiarization training.
  • Application of maritime regulations, classification society rules, and industry standards to ensure compliance.
  • Experience conducting risk assessments and developing risk reduction strategies for shipboard systems, emphasizing propulsion, power generation, and mission‑critical equipment.
  • Proficiency in providing technical support for in‑service vessels throughout their lifecycle, leveraging past industrial and operational experience to solve complex engineering challenges.

Compensation

Proposed salary range for this position is $63,300–$129,700. The range reflects factors such as geographic location, federal government contract labor categories, prior experience, education, and certifications.
